I am hopping to buy an 'S' at the end of the year (Wedding first!) What are they like for an everyday car ? I lived with a vixen for a while which i rebuilt, along with other 'Classics', so mechanical and body work are not a problem.

After 72,000 miles in my S I'd say go for it, but do be aware that there are some down sides. I used my 2.8 S1 as my only car for over 6 years (91-97). The down side is standing outside in the rain at work and the servicing which towards the end used to take a week while the garage waited for bits to be sent down from Blackpool, or Dagenham! (I used to use the local Ford garage, see other threads, with parts through Nigel Manusel's (Westovers))

The cars are older now, but the classic TVR speciallists (DG, Wedge, Venn) do appear to have most of the parts covered. If you had a Vixen you should understand most of the issues. When buying, first get copy of Steve's S Series Book and find out if the bits that go wrong (trailing arms, door hinges) have been repaired and those that ware out have been replaced (Tyres, Steering column bush), or budget to get them done at some point.

I now have a tin car for every day and garden tip trips. After a visit to David Gerald for new trailing arms, hood, etal; the S has been out a lot recently.

As an aside, as the weather has been so good the last month, the car park at work has had two S's in it, mine and a S1.5 (2.9), both of which have been coming here since 1991, both with the same owners! Roof's down of course!

If mechanics etc aren't a problem then you'll be fine (says a man with his in the carpark outside) the only thing I'd say is that if you have a significant distance to travel, beware, as it seems the resale of an S is based a lot on recorded miles (yes as well as condition ,Service History etc. etc. everyone)and you could devalue a low mileage classic by running miles on the clock quite easily..

Cheers,
Matt.
