Gearboxes are one of those things really best left to those that are experienced at it.
Theoretically its not difficult, in practice whining gears and jumping out if gear is the result without the relevant experience to understand what the issues are, and lets face it its not an easy thing to remove and refit.
Is your box knackered? Gearbox deterioration tends to be very slow so if you have a slightly annoying whine or something its likely to stay the same for quite some time.

I agree with Barkychoc, I'm pretty handy in the workshop and rebuilding engines and that but transmissions need special tools and a press.
You don't want to be spending lots of dosh on special tools to use once, I'm not, it's going out.
Although Ashcroft have told me some parts are no longer available? what happened to reverse engineering??

My 'box has developed an occasional crunch when being shoved quickly into 5th under load. Some might say "what do you expect, its done 80,000?" and they'd probably be right. One day it will probably have to be replaced though so I've just bough and LT77 'box for very little money off Ebay. I'm going to strip it down to get a better understanding of what's in there and how it works. I've re-built motor bike gearboxes so I'm not too worried about what I'm doing. The gear box is a lot smaller than the engine and there are a lot fewer moving parts and at the end of the day, if I cock it up I haven't lost much.
As for Ashcroft Engineering, they told me the LT77 is not a Land Rover gearbox. They also said there was a shortage of parts for this 'box but "if it was a Land Rover box there wouldn't be a problem". Hum........

it's mostly about very careful measurement and not minding the smell of the oil too much.Rover ones? None. I've rebuilt a few Triumph boxes before though.
Rebuilding a gearbox is just a case of carefully taking it apart with lots of photos and/or sketches so you know how to put it back together, measuring everything, replacing anything that's too worn to be used and putting it back together with the right amount of float everywhere.
Admittedly it's not the easiest car to change the box in but gearboxes aren't scary magical things, they're just gears, shafts and a mechanism to lock the gears and shafts together.
