Gearbox help please!

Hi Guys,
It appears that i have lost my gearbox (dont know how ??). I need a replacement, i know its a Ford type 9 (Sierra, capri, granada )but some show "long input" is it this one I need or just a standard ?

Pretty sure it is the long one you need for a V6 engine the other (probably more comon) version fits the 4 cylinder engines.

Also read somewhere that many "kit car" builders get the long version modified to fit straight fours because ratios are better ?

I have been looking at the 2.8 ones in particular, the simple way would be to compare but thats not going to happen ! I can understand loosing the odd 13mm socket but not a gearbox oh and also a leg off my crane !

Check with others, but reckon the 2.8 is the one, Ford didn't actually use the type 9 on many (any ?)2.9 engines but TVR prefered it to the later MT75(i think its called) box.




prefered = probably got it cheaper to use up Fords surplace stock

Phill,you will need to check the speedo assy as the drive from the capri is cable and your car maybe electronic just a thought

I thought the Type 9 was used on both 2.8 and 2.9 engines, I have not come across anyone yet that has an MT75 box in their car.

Steve Heath says in the bible that TVR stuck with the type 9 as the ratios gave better acceleration.

When I was building my kit I had two type 9's one was standard one long, the comments on the ratios are right, think you want the long one, pretty sure they are found on 2.8 capri's not sure if they were on the sierra 2.8s. The long one i had was from a capri I think.
Its a change to the input shaft and bell housing to convert a long to a short

This is correct, I did a bit of research when mine went wrong in this area and the problem getting one meant I got mine rebuilt. What you need is

1. A type 9 Gearbox for a V6 car (also called type N)
2. You need the V6 version because that has the longer input shaft and the correct bell housing
3. You need one with an electronic speedometer pick up if S2 onwards (or mechanical cable if S1). (check this for your actual car). The casing is different for the electronic and manual pick up.
4. The electronic speedometer was only fitted to the early Granadas with Manual box (hence very few about as these were mainly autos and the sierra got the MT75)
5. Second hand on ebay are usually ex Capri, or early sierra and hence have manual speedo pick up so check.

The gearbox is for a s1 , so the mechanical speedo is no problem so in theory the sierra box is ok . Just the shaft length to worry about now !

Finally sorted ! I found a second hand box and decided to get it refurbed. I found a guy in North Herts who refurbed for me. He did give some good pointers though:

The 2.8 gearbox must have the letters AB stamped on the shaft.
The desiel box is the same dimensions on the shaft etc but gear ratios are wrong.
The 2.8 shaft is longer than other engines.

He did mention that he has come across alot of people with what they belive to be a 2.8 v6 box that was actually a desiel box. With the long shaft boxes selling for near on 180 quid it can be an expensive error!
