Dear Enthusiasts of TVRs,

I'm new on your discussion table.
If I find the Section "Who is Who" I will tell something about me, but in this Post
I will tell about my Problem with the Waterpump and understanding the function of the
Watercircuit. Sorry for my english but its long time I visited GB and Shool.
3 Weeks ago I changed the exhaust manifolds. No problem for this operation. I used
manifold gasket from Mercedes, because no one other could help me. This sort of
gaskets is very thin, but works well. I tell this, because after 4 days the Waterpump
was wrong. I dont know the english word, the Wellendichtring was leaking.
I thougt "why not" perhaps I think the Pump is the first and in this way it is 19years.
The Ford dealer found an new for me and I put it in. The first days all was well.
But after our Meeting in Hamburg (Yearmeeting TVR Club Germany) the new Pump had the same
leaking. So it worked for 8 days and 1600km (1000Miles).
Is it possible that the new manifolds could damage the pumps?? (Heat, Distance, ???)
The construction of the circulation I understand also not well. If I put water in the
expansion Tank (Plastic) the level of water is not so high like the level of Water in
the Swirl Pott. Is this right or has my car the wrong Expansiontank??

In hope of a simple answer,
Greatings from Cologne.
Rolf

Greetings from Paderborn!
If your S3C is "standard" then you do not put water in the expansion tank, but instead use the Swirl Pot.
Don't understand why you needed to use a Merc gasket as the Ford items are easily available.
Can't help with the water pump problem, but I would get a dealer to fit it then it is their problem.
If you want to meet up some time then PM me.
Paul

ETA, just a thought, may be your fan belt is too tight?

"Wellendichtring" means "shaft"

I think that Paul's suggestion is sound as an overtight fan belt will pull the pump off centre and cause the mechanical seal inside to (potentially) rub and wear prematurely. That said if the failure is internal, take it off and take the component back under the component warranty. If you take it off then they'll have trouble showing anything such as in correct fitment.

Also don't forget sometimes new components just fail early in life. In the UK this is known as "infantile failure" or the following the "bathtub failure curve" Basically things are most likely to fail really early in life, with likelihood dropping away very quickly to a low probability then the probability slowly increasing as they get older.

If bought from a Main Dealer it could be very old stock, not a lot of people with 20 year old Granadas buy spares from main dealers, so possibly seal had perished or hardened, or shaft could have corroded damaging the seal when turned ?

While I agree an over tightened fan belt is not good would it not have to be "stupidly tight" to wreck a water pump in such a short time scratchchin ?

Could there have been an "air lock" so seal ran dry if systen not re-filled and bled properly ? (possibly not as no report of overheating). Did you bleed off air from vent on top of radiator ?

Thanks for replay,

the belt is in good condition and correct tied.
I never tie belts fast.
In the FOMCC (Ford Oldtimer Motorsport Club Cologne) I asked some Members
about the Situation. Some know the type of Pump I mounted and they say
it is not a good Series. The Alu Pump often kills between 500Miles and 1000Miles.
So I'm not amused about. I think I look for an old one with no Miles.
Perhaps it will be better than an Replika.
If one of you know a good Produktion, please tell me.
I hope that next week the new Pump arrived.
About the Merc Gasket. My Ford dealer has no little oval Gaskets.
Only my Citroen Dealer for Traction Avant has some. But it was easier
to buy the Merc one. Which Type of Gasket you take???

Have you tried these for a water pump?
They seem to have a few options - select Taunus / Cologne engine.

No idea if they will deliver to France.

Hi,

the new Pump arrived. It looks like the one which drove only
1500km. I hope it works longer this time.

Cheers

Hi,

the new Pump is already installed and work. (how long)
This time we put the normal Cap on the Swirl Pot (very strong, like sealing)
and the Pressure Cap on the Expansiontank.
It works very good.

Cheers

I think you are not amused???
Pressure Cap on Swirl Pot and normal Cap on Expansiontank = loosing Water
in Swirl Pot.
Only one of us has no Problems with this, he has an Swirl Pot with a big
had (0,5 L) for the first expansion.

Rolf
PS: sorry if i'm wrong, but I don't understand this system

Don't worry it should work both ways around (in theory) just do what suits your car. This is an ongoing joke between Ketvrin, gerald-TVR and me.
