Just taken the heads off the S2 (2.9 V6) get the snapped exhaust bolts out, I’m going to take to a engine shop if I can’t get them out, I’m wondering if I should get them skimmed while they are there? A few people have told me the 2.9 heads should be done before refitting them, is it worth doing or should I just leave it as the were ok?

I'm sure everyone will disagree but..

The heads on the Ford V6 are pretty solid, as they only cover 3 cylinders they are less likely to buckle. If you have a flat edge (engineering steel rule - a good one!) and a set of feeler guages you can check them quite easily, chances are they will be fine.

Good luck,

Steve.

Thanks Steve. I've been telling him all weekend not to have them done. No problems with the heads so why muck about with them !!!

Get on with cleaning 'em Paul !!

Oh Yes! this man loves his car.

Now lets get one thing right, If Johno tells you its ok, then its ok.

Bit of advice from me, having allready started the same nightmare. Its taking me ages to do mine as i keep finding other things that need doing, but probably did'nt really. I think the key at this time of year is to try to get the car on the road (provided there is nothing serious that needs doing) and then wait for the winter to start stripping it right down if required. You will find at times that you get fed up and need some encouragement, well with help from Johno you have all the help you need. I,m sure he won,t let you slack.

This is my problem at the moment I'm slogging away at times and then do nothing for a week, as there is nn one round here with an S to say, I'll pop back on friday, I'll expect you will have that done by then mate etc.

Keep us informed how its going, good luck!

gadgit.

Well, I think I’m swaying towards getting the heads reconditioned, 3 angle seats new guides etc, probably doesn’t need it all doing but a few mechanic friends have said the 2.8’s always need skimming, the 2.9 don’t but its recommended. If I send them away to be done it won’t cost a much more than my local place want to just skim and remove the bolts, I’ll have them back in as new condition in a week, then all I need to do is put them on, no lapping etc. this will give me time to Hammerite the chassis where the exhaust is. Can’t work on it this weekend anyway and it will be ready for next weekend.

Sounds like you've already talked yourself into it...
Only thing to bear in mind is not to remove too much material otherwise you'll end up with det problems and have to retard / re-curve the dizzy. But the 3 angle seats are well worth doing.

Well the heads have come back, so I’m going to start cleaning the block up tonight then hopefully start to get it back together on Saturday. I’ve been told not to use any kind or head paste with the gaskets, but may need some for the inlet manifold. Going to have fun over the next few days, so many bits do you think I’ll have left over?

Just make sure you've got none missing when you think you're done - reminds me of the story about the Surgeon and the missing scalpel . . . a not so sucessful operation

I had the same job done on mine a while back. Progress Engineering in Maidstone (01622 687079) charged me £160 - how much did you pay?

£200, for them to skim the heads, fit new bronze guides, new core plugs, get out 5 snapped bolts, 3 angle the valve seats and under cut the valve.

Congratulations to PaulV. I was there to give Paul some assistance today and the car is back up and running. Spot on !!

Paul pre-celebrated this by painting the rocker covers PINK !!! Long story, but they look better than they did ....
