New speedometer

Hi guys,

Just bought a new speedometer with 000000 miles on it and will be fitting it soon before my MOT. My S2 has 96,000 miles on old clock so does anyone how i can change the milage on the new speedo?? Seen companies who specialise in putting correct milage on speedos but it costs way too much and their websites look dodgy.

P.s Im a law abiding citizen if this is not something i can do please let me know. Alternatively if someone can help but doesnt want to post on here please e-mail

Hi Karl

I have taken a speedo appart and the odometer is a sealed unit partly electronic and partly mechanical and , as far as I could see, there just isnt any way to change it easily. I wouldnt attempt it if I were you. The milage 'correction' services you mention I think only apply to the digital dashboards fitted to more modern cars.

I would recommend that you photograph the old speedo in situ and keep it. Then if you sell the car pass it on so the new owner knows the true milage. Its also easy to show the milage at each MOT via www.motinfo.gov.uk by printing off a report and passing on with the car.

I take it you have a Stewart Warner speedo?
At the moment I have mine apart and have ordered a new IC for it, looking at the cover on the odometer, you may be able to cut part of the plastic open and shuffle the counter wheels.

What was the problem with the old one???

As Norman says, take a photo, with a newspaper in the shot to confirm date. Also maybe contact one of the local TVR specialists to put something in writing.

If you a member of the TVRCC maybe the RO of the regional group could put something in writing. I'm not sure if the main TVRCC office have a database of cars as on the renewal forms there seems to be some sort of details held about a car, so maybe they could also put a note on the database.

ETB won't/can't do the SW gauges, I had a long and very informative conversation with them last week.

Out of interest was the chip you purchased expensive?
I have a speedo belonging to Norman (Gerald-TVR) that I keep promising to look at with an oscilloscope but haven't got round to it.

Have you followed the pulses through the circuit and there's nothing coming out of the chip you are replacing then?

Sorry Chris, nothing that techie, it failed before (bout 5 years ago) and it was the IC that time....

Nothing wrong with old speedo it was just a little rusty at the bottom so found a kmph one on flea bay along with a new rev counter supposedly original ex TVR stock.

I assume you got them from a guy in Blackpool? If so he is ex-factory and now runs his own TVR business and is the organiser for the TVR challenge race series. I got a rev counter from him last year and a volt-meter a couple of months back. When I got the volt meter I asked about a speedo and he said he only had a kph one left. With the help of Norman's box of spares I now now my speedo problem isn't the Speedo it self.
