Getting an odd sound from my trusty S3.

When gently accelerating (I do occasionally) at low speed, when I first press the accelerator there is a 'grating' noise from behind me for about a second. Then it goes away.

Its not very loud - so may well happen at faster speed, just that I can't hear it. Don't think its rubbing against anything such as the exhaust - and the sound appears to be coming from behind me - ie not gearbox related.

Any idea?

Wheel Bearing ......

If UJ are knacked then you'll be able to feel play (circular) by gripping the drive shaft and twisting.

Unlikely to be diff as generally go on for years.

Prop shaft UJ's can go aswell if not maintained. Check for play in those aswell.

Cheers

Could just be the exhaust vibrating against the chassis as the engine twists under torque. Try pulling the tail pipes hard in all directions and see if the exhaust comes close to anything. CV failure is very common and would be most noticeable at low speed, but generally as a regular knocking sound once per wheel revolution - not a grating noise.

Split welds on silencers make a similar noise and you may not even hear the exhast blowing!
