S3 CHASSIS

I have just bought a s3 which was an unfinnished project the body was on but not bolted down.
I have noticed when the body is on the front part of the chassis protrudes below the sill I have looked at a few pictures but I cant make out if this is normal ?
The chassis has had new outriggers fitted & as far as I have been told the ex owner paid a lot of money for the chassis could anyone help with any pictures or measurments that I could check the chassis out with.
we have had the body at about 45 deg up at the rear & lowered it on the chassis because I was told thats the way it should be lowered on the chassis but still wont sit anty further down at the front the rear is fine.
Its not the end of the world if i have got to cut the outrigger off & re position it but i dont want it is correct

Hi Ivor

As the body is lowered at the back it has to slide forward, your best bet might be to contact aero340 he's in your neck of the woods by PM.

Was the car from Wollaston?

You would probably be better to do a Direct comparison with another S3, There's bound to be another owner not too far away who would be happy to bring theirs around for a measure up.
My outriggers are about 10mm lower than the sill and the overall length to the outside of the tubes is 56" as near as I can measure it.
There will probably be someone along soon with loads of photo's and info.

Rob when you sat the chassis is 10 mm lower is that all the way along ?
Would be great to see one so i could measure it Im in cheshire if anyone is close to

Yes they are usually parallel all the way along. Quite noticeable when they are painted red and clean.

thanks Rob that makes sense I will have a play with packings to see if i can get it lavel there are 2 bolts that go trough the boot floor & rubber packers if you get the time tommorrow could you have a look to see how many packers have been used

I didn't think that was an S3 ( could be wrong , its happened many times before )
If its that car i saw it at a Nothants meet .

Just had a thought didn't he buy another one recently ? I think the one i saw was a dark green S 1

No not at all I know a little of the history of the car and was very seriously thinking about buying it as a project car. While there a lot to do on the car avast amount has been spent on seriously good bits. try and locate a local owner of an S3 as it will be of great help in knowing how and where to put bits.

And keep asking questions here, a very helpful bunch, also if you post pictures with the queries it will help people help you.

But lets see some photos of the car as it stands now and we will be interested in seeing the progress

After measuring the outriggers in relation to the main chassis it looks like the outriggers have been welded wrong which is ashame really as the guy i bought the car off told me the refurbed chassis cost a £1000.
I put a straight edge across the main chassis & measured from the bottom of the outrigger to the straight edge its only a rough guide I know as i have no measurments to go off but front nearside was 1cm front offside was 2cm both o/s & n/s rear gave me 4cm each which really confirms it i will have to cut & reweld them which is no big deal as I the facility in the workshop to do it as long as im right,

I have an S3 rolling chassis in good original condition (no welded refurbishments) without the body or exhaust on, so it should be easy to measure from a straight edge as you have done for a comparison if you would like but I can't do it untill the weekend?
