My S4c 2.9i needs a new clutch the car was first registered Jan 1994 so I assume that is was built late 1993 & I’m also assuming it has the later MT75 gearbox. Dose anyone know the part numbers for the three piece clutch kit & were would be the best place to get one (ie price wise). Finally how difficult & how would it take a semi competent DIY mechanic (myself) to do the job. One TVR specialist told me they would allow six hour for a gearbox out job. Thanks guys

Hi Dave.
I have a 91 S3C 2.9.
I have recently changed my clutch as well as the slave cylinder and various other bits while the gearbox was out
The Steve Heeks bible states an MT75 box is fitted if I remember correctly, but mine is a type 9. Do not know if they fitted the MT75 later. If so, you may as well ignore this...

There is lots of talk over the correct clutch. The wrong one may only last a few thousand miles!!! I can only say that I used the parts below and could not see any reason why they will not last a good while. Lots of clearance between friction plate and flywheel centre so no worries for me.

Clutch kit replaced complete. Unipart No GCK482A/Valeo from the local motor factor. I took the clutch down and matched one up over the counter.
Gearbox oil from Land Rover dealer MTF94 Part No STC9158. Gearchange nice and smooth, although some suggest various types. The choice is yours I guess.

Clutch slave cylinder replaced - Series 3 Land Rover (tenner of the bay) and 7/16th union then fitted as the new cylinder is not metric like the original.

As for can you do it yourself. If you are reasonably confident then I don't see why not. The only issue I had was the box would not come out of the chassis as too tight. Others have had no issues! I struggled with this part and ground down the webs either side of the box, where it needs to clear the chassis/mount brackets.
There are a few links on this site. If you have a search I am sure you will find one showing how to do the job.
Hope this helps?
Stew.

As far as I know the MT75 in an S is an urban myth - none have come to light yet.

TVR stuck with the type Nine gearbox rather than change to the MT 75 as the type Nine had lower gearing so sharper acceleration while Ford use the MT75 with the 2.9 engine. However I understand that some S's have been retro fitted with the MT75.

So as usual with TVR the only rule is that there are exceptions banghead

Type nine main casing is cast iron (probably painted black)and the tailhousing is alloy, the gearstick goes into the very end of the tailhousing with 3 Torx screws. I believe the MT75 is all alloy and the selector rod runs externally from the main casing to the gear lever.
