Throttle Sticking

Hello chaps - hoping someone can help with the following:

Have had a problem all week where the throttle appears to get stuck once I've pushed the accelerator pedal down, and the car then behaves like an automatic before the pedal is released back to its original position (normally after a few seconds). If it went on longer than this I could flip the pedal back with my foot and all would return to normal. However, the problem has got worse and yesterday at a junction changing gear resulted in the car overrevving as if someone had their foot jammed on the pedal - shifting into neutral and flipping the pedal back made no difference at all and the only way I could clear it was to turn the engine off.

Returned home and made the obvious checks re carpet jamming pedal or bonnet insulation coming away and jamming throttle open. I've also checked the butterflies inside the throttle aren't all gunged up (nice and clean)and checked the various electrical connectors round the throttle body.....

I can see from searching these forums that the throttle pot and the throttle sensor seem a common cause of running problems but can anyone clarify if this sounds like the case or should I be looking at something else?

Thanks...tried the suggested test and pretty conclusive....It's not the throttle pot causing the problem

Could be the idle air control valve which tends to get gunged up and stick open. Its fixed to the side of the throttle body with 2 screws. easy to remove and clean with carb cleaner. It is used by the engine management system to allow air into the engine to control the tickover. (tickover is not controlled by the throttle stop which should be adjusted fully closed)
