I've just ventured into the world of TVR ownership with a half decent S1 on an F plate. Problem is the suspension feels a little soggy to me (its a bit too bouncy for a TVR), but as its the first one I've driven I have no way of knowing if I was expecting too much or if the thing needs new shocks and springs. Has anybody had a similar problem/knows this to be a common problem and do you have any recommendations?

The original spring rates are very low and these cars normally corner on their door handles, yours may be perfectly normal. On the other hand you could have worn out dampers - if you're still on the originals they're probably past it by now. If the dampers are gone you will probably notice the car wallows when you turn or brake abruptly. It may also produce a curious 'corkscrew' effect if only some of the dampers are working.

Most of the TVR specialists will offer a mildly uprated spring/damper kit, up to around 20% stiffer. I've got a very low opinion of AVO and Spax, but that leaves plenty of good brands to choose from: Tower View Gaz, Ledas, Nitron, Bilstein etc. Prices vary enormously and generally you get what you pay for.

Cheers,
Peter Humphries (and a green V8S on Nitron dampers)

A simple test for whether the dampers are shagged is to bounce the corner of the car. It should return to its normal position in 1 1/2 revolutions of the damper.

If it bounces more than that then the dampers are shot generally. Unless of course they are adjustables wich are backed right off.

I would echo Peters comments on standard kit aswell. If they are the original they will be knackered by now.

Cheers

To venture a second opinion, and not wanting to call Peters views into question, but I am very pleased with my new AVO's & springs and at the time of hunting for choices was hearing dodgy things about the other brands mentioned..... I only say this to qualify that its worth shopping around an making the choice yourself. You will always find different people have different experiences of the same products.... thats what makes us, well different.

We dont all bank at the same place, or shop at the same supermarket.....choice is king

no offence Peter, your knowledge is deeper than mine!

Back to the thread, if the springs are worn then the bonnet wont open fully and alow the stay to be put into place, this isnt foolproof, but its what the 'bible' says.

cheers

Thanks to all who offered an opinion. In a bizarre way its nice to know that there may be something wrong. I was beginning to think I had bought a bag of s***. Thanks once again and I look forward to chatting to you again as I decide what else can be improved.
