Fuel Guage Odd Readings

I have just removed the fuel sender unit in order to clean up all the bits and re-seat using red hermatite to stop a slight fuel seepage. Done all that and took the car out for a little run in the glorious sun shine (its so good to be retired) and all was well expect for a short while the fuel guage flicked up to full, theres only less than two gollons in the tank, and then flicking down to a correct reading. Movement too quick and extream to be fuel surge.

No proplem thought I its just a loose connection of some sort. But it aint all joints tight and I wasnt able to repeat the problem flexing, pushing and pulling connections.

Any suggestions folks, thanks in advance.

sounds like a slight short circuit in the rheostat that the fuel level arm acts agains. No great problem.

Unless, of course, it makes an ickle teeny-weeny spark.

No seriously, I think they are all a bit like that. I fitted a new one and it occasionaly does a wee jump, even. The old one used to be all over the place - if there were any sparks associated, the inside of my tank must have been like Up-Helly-A...

Well if it helps (I'm pretty sure it doesn't) mine doesn't jump around.

Saying that I only look at it for about a second every 20 miles or more so if it did jump I probably wouldn't notice it.

Hi

Don't post on here very often,i haven't taken my petrol sender out of the 's' yet.But i had a problem with petrol seeping into the plastic float on another car i was working on.It gave a higher reading than normal.
