Cooling Fan

Have done the usual lay up for the winter,and started my S3 every week or so until the electric cooling fan comes on and gets everything nice and hot.

Took it for a bit of a spin yesterday,then left it to tick over until the fan came on....except it didn't,temp guage rose to the red and coolant started to leak from the expansion tank.Have not had any problems at all since owning this car with cooling etc.

Any suggestions please ?

Check the fuse.

If that's ok, then check the otter switch in the top radiator hose just in front of the battery tray - short out the two terminals with ignition on, fan should come on. If it does, the switch is fooked.

If it doesn't, check the two-wire connector to the fan, just under the centre of the radiator. Open to elements, gets corroded, fan gets no current, car boils.

If that's ok, check the fan motor (direct feed from battery, see if it turns).

See how that goes.

just don't get this "lay up for winter" business, if you're gonna fire it up every week or so then why not give it a blast down the road ? How can you sit there in the garage listening to it and not want to go for a drive ???????

PS hope you get problem sorted, probably just a bad electrical connection

Thanks for that guys,haven't had the chance to have a proper look yet.

I agree,listening to it and not driving down the road is difficult to resist,but it is just so clean and the roads so cakky I'd rather wait til spring. Sad I know.

Try spinning the fan by hand, mine seizes up if left for a few months, a squirt of wd40 solves it.

First chance to have a look at the cooling fan problem...thanks for your advice,seems problem is that the cooling fan has packed up ( will not work even when directly connected to battery).

Can anyone recommend a decent replacement item for an S3 (1990) please ?

I have a spare one of the orange type, Have not tested it yet though.It came with a spare box of bits with the car.PM me if interested.

Got my new ' second hand' cooling fan (thank you Neil) only to find the old one decided to work again....dodgy plastic connector ?

It's the orange type with the metal bars across it. It works perfectly so is up for sale (what I paid for it)if anyone needs one !
