Does this look right?
Discussion
Hi Guys novice again,
After having the suspension parts powder coated I have now reassembled the suspension. The only trouble is it doesn't look right to me.The bottom wishbones are correct and cant be swapped around the question I have is with the top wishbones are these correct? I would expect everything to Line up..... Top Suspension bracket to Upper ball joint to bottom suspension bracket and bottom ball joint. Everything seems to be rear of the suspension coil which does't look pleasing to the eye.I've tryed swapping them aound then everything then lies forward of the suspension coil.I've looked for pictures on the forum and owners linked sites for answers but cant find anything useful for my answer.
Take a look, sorry about the picture quality my camera seems to have night vision which my 2yr old has turned on and I cant turn it off!!

Hope this helps, it looks original

I would say your pictures show it correctly, ie with the Spring/Damper unit forward of the centre line.If you put them on the other way I think you may find it hard to mount the ARB (guessing)due to the angle you would have to lift it to bring the mtg forward.

Makes sense because the top ball joint must be behind the lower ball joint, because that's what determines Caster of the wheel. If they were exactly vertical you'd have no caster and you'd be fighting the steering all the time. The spring can be mounted vertically, in the same plane as suspension movement.
What you don't want is the top ball joint IN FRONT of the lower one, because it would be like driving an ASDA* trolley with 2 wonky wheels.
* - other brands of wonky-wheeled shopping trolley may be available in your area

It may be the angle of the photo but the top ball joint does look as if it is front of the bottom ball joint, correct me if I'm wrong.Or am I missing something??
Thanks
Neil
How do you quote off previous threads?

It's the angle of the photo I think.
Look at your 2 photos: on the first (offside) the front of the car is to the right, so the top joint is offset to the rear. Second photo is the same, but reversed, top joint is again to the rear.
In Clarenceboddinger's photo, the rear of the car is upwards and again the joint is offset in that direction.
In Gerald-TVR's photo, the front of the car is to the left and the top joint is offset to the rear.
Barkychoc's photo is at a slight angle, but shows clearly that if you were to put the wishbones the wrong way, it would pull the top joint well forwards, and you can't do that - you need to have caster so that a line drawn between the two ball joints intersects the road in front of the centre of the wheel. It has to, there is no doubt about it, or you have no steering stability.
ETA Typed while you were making your second post, glad you're happy!

Another way to explain this is to look at the Angle of the Front Forks on Chopper style motorcycles, the rake of them is extreme this gives an almost inability to turn the handlebars (utmost straightline stability) The Americans love this as their roads are long and straight so they can drive in a relaxed manner wrt steering, that style of motorcycle does not go round tight corners easily.clarenceboddiger said:
