Should it stay or go?

I've been thinking long and hard about selling the S (after 6 years) because:

a) I became a dad
b) I started commuting to work on the tube
c) I lost the local garage I was renting, so the S now lives outside.

However, after several months of job uncertainty I got offered a new job yesterday

This means I will be commuting by car . It isn't far, probably 5 miles each way but LOTS of traffic.

So, 'sensible' car or use the S daily again

If I sell, what's 'sensible' for the 3.5K I'd hope to get for the S

Seriously I'd try it first, if it doesn't work as a daily drive then sell.

Have a look back at your photos of you and the car in Spain etc.

If that doesn't inpire you to keep hold of it, then its time for it to go.

5 miles going by the direct route. Of course, we all know in the S that isn't going to happen

I investigated this, but my '£100' bangers always seem to end up being £500-£1K bangers. Once tax, insurance, future MOT + servicing is taken in to account it just doesn't add up, for me anyway. I just cannot see why a sub 3K car would be more reliable than my S and it would just leave me less money to look after the S properly.

Plus, the wife would never go with the idea

For a 5 mile journey in traffic I would take the bus (probably quicker given any bus lanes) or get a Moped and enjoy the S at weekends.

Public transport claims 1 hour 10 minutes, by train and bus - with a fair bit of walking. Now, I'm all for public transport (I do 50 minutes on the train and a 1 mile walk now) but that's just crazy.

Moped could work, except where to park it here (block of flats, no garage)

Good suggestions so far everyone. I'm tempted to try it in the S, because if it is my daily driver then I can justify spending more on it

That sounds like the sensible option.

I don't think a bike would have been good today.
I think I passed Noah in Ickenham this morning.

Keeping and using the S is the only choice that provides a great option at the weekends too. It has the benefit of already being there so you just have to try it to see if its viable...

and if its off the road for short periods while you do essential repairs/improvements then you have the other options available as temporary measures.

This would be my suggestion, in fact, it's what I've done. I thought I'd need to sell the S as I moved into London but I've decided to pay the extra £350 per year to insure it and keep it for the weekends. I appreciate that today wasn't excactly cycling weather but it felt epic when I got into the office and everyone looked at me as though I'd climbed Everest - or cycled across Vauxhall Bridge (depending on your view!).

We all know sitting in traffic in the S is not much fun and not very good for them either - go the bike route and get fit as well as save some money to pimp your ride!

I think a canoe would have been perfect today. Even since they built the cycle lane in Ickenham it floods badly as the drains were covered over. Great planning that!

Roy, the new job is in Stockly Park so will be quite a change after commuting on the Tube for the last 18 years!

Quite keen on the bike route - except out management agent has recently banned all bikes from the communal hallways here, so there is no-where to keep it. Caused quite a bit of a stir as there is no-where to chain them outside either.
