After going to Fords to pick up me new bolts for the head 2.9, they gave me totally different bolts. I showed them the ones i took out 3 3/4 inch long including the head, torque type, no washers. They are telling me that I have had the wrong bolts in my head, and should have the 5 inch with a big thick washer and has a star head. Now I don't know what to put back in. The bloke at Fords checked the screen and says that the long ones are the only ones shown for this engine 2.4 and 2.9 OHV. How the hell have I got these torque bolts in my ford engine as they are sure that they did not fit them on these engines.

the part number for the bolts from Fords is F6155563

Any one else stripped the 88 2.9 engine and found this ? I would like some advice as I'm stuck!
Obiously i don't want to put back the wrong bolts and damage the head. Help, Help, Help.

Awaiting an accurate and informative reply A.S.A P.

My engine is a '89 2.9 and had torq (star fitting) head bolts fitted. There were no washers fitted with mine at all.

Some of the engines were fitted with Hexagonal bolts and if so I would have sought to replace them with the same.

I have the old ones sitting in the garage at my Dads and will get him to measure them and post it later today.

Just re read the post ---- D'Oh

Mine were that length. They certainly weren't 5 inches long.

The Haynes book recommends replacing these Hexagonal bolts with the torque type anyway I think.

I got mine as part of a 'de-coke' kit.

Did you give him the engine number aswell as the model and year ??

Additionally to this if the car has been working without any issue (as mine had been) then just ask him for new Torq bolts and put them back in.

Thanks for the info Johno, where did you get the de-coke kit ? they may have the bolts.

I'll be back to Ford tommorow with my engine no. The bolts i took out were not the multistar type, with a fine star, they were the 6 side large star type. It appears that only about 3/4 inch of the thread goes into the block. They were of the opinion at Ford that this amount of thread is not enough, but we can't be the only engines with 3 3/4 inch bolts holding the head on.

They are 6 point Torq bolts and these aren't the onlyu 2 engine I've heard off or seen that use them.

I got my de-coke kit from Busseys Fords in Norwich. Its a standard '89 2.9 EFI decoke kit over the counter which happened to include head gaskets....sometimes they don't apparently.

What a Bunch of pillocks at Ford in Cambridge.

I went back in today with me engine No. The man in there puts up the engine on the screen and says, there you are mate you've got the right bolts (which they sent for) So I say to him, can I see the highlight which comes up when the mouse pointer goes on the bolt. Of course you can said he, and there it is in plain english length 87mm, get a ruler says I, off he goes and hey presto 3 3/4 inch long.

I'm mad by now, how the hell did you manage to get me 5 inch bolts with great thick washers and nothing like the ones i wanted. Well he says, the fitter out the back said that these were the right ones, and we had them in the parts bin! Was I not happy! its a bugger when you have to put the store technician right on what you have on your engine!

So what next, sorry mate they only come in packs of 5 !
4 more than i need £2 each plus vat. I will not repeat what was said next.

After all the fuss i made they got me the 16 bolts for the original price. Just goes to show how careful you have to be at the trade, and how useful this site is!
Thats another pint i owe you Johno!
all the best.
