Had a good day out today with the W Sussex lot. I now have two maladies with the car that may be connected, so any advice from similar experiences would be most welcome.
I'm told that my reversing light flashes on/off on the move This was commented on twice today, once when joining the mway on the up change to 5th. The other time when rattling down uneven A/B roads (never in 5th).
The other malady is that the Speedo has started to cut in and out, normally dropping off when hitting cats eye/pot holes and sometimes under max acceleration .
My initial thoughts are they're connected with perhaps a dodgy earth to gearbox? or there are two separate faults?
I was under the car last week realigning the exhaust due to it vibrating onto the chassis, there was about the thickness to 2 cigarette papers between them! Whilst there had a look around; I'd be b*ggered if I can access either the Speedo sensor or the reversing light switch even if I had too so any advice on how to access these areas (centre tunnel?) would be most welcome. Also does the gearbox have a seperate earthing arrangement, if so, where?
Thanx in advance.

Harry

People no replies yet
I was rather hoping for the usual PH input of 'been there, had that, done this' when I got home from work earlier so as to give me a direction for this evening.
So don't be shy, not that you will be, and give me the nudge in the right direction to stop me poking about aimlessly under the car.
Any advice welcome.

Harry

PS advice from any itinerant Chimaera owners slumming it in the 'S' forum may be able to help as the running gear is Chim 400HC stuff.

Okay, Okay, we'll tell!

Gearbox / Reverse lights, - No idea.
Only thing I can say is that many, many, years ago I had a MK2 Escort, (don't take the pi55!) and the reverse lights on that would fail intermittently. It turned out that there was a popper type connection on the side of the 'box and the wire attached to it had a poor connection. It's probably different on the 'box on your car but as I said it is a suggestion.

The Speedo thing is different however, mine started to do strange things as well, and eventually packed up altogether. Again a wire had broken on the connector, behind the dashboard. The connector on mine is roughly to the left of the steering wheel just behing the dash panel. It's easy to get to (in terms of TVR) so you may be lucky.
Hope this helps.

Reversing light - just one of those TVR things. Our V8S used to do this too, as well as a host of other unpredictable tail-light combinations. Hasn't done it since David Batty fitted a new rear bulb holder for us The contacts on the old one were corroded from water making its way into the boot when the channel drain holes were blocked.

Harry,

Sounds like iffy connections.

On my S3 if I take out the centre console and gear gator etc, I can get to my reverse light switch/connector - it's a bit tight though.

In the bible it does mention that some cars have a removeable access panel underneath the centre console - although mine hasnt got one.

Oh, and the gearbox does have an earth lead, it's by the gearbox cross member, but you'd have to have the exhaust off to see it. I don't think this is the only earthing for the 'box/engine though (can't remember, too early and I've only just got up )

Cheers,

Dave.

I had a similar problem with my S2 speedo when I bought the car - a little disconcerting!

I discovered it to be a dodgy connection in the plug to the speed sensor on the gearbox, a good clean up with a needle file and contact cleaner sorted it out - it has been fine eversince.

The bad news is that you will probably have to remove or possibly just lower the exhaust to access it.

Good luck!
