S2 Starting problem

Hi,
my car has been off the road for more years i can remember, it gets fired up quite often. My problem is, the old battery was crpp, so i'd charge it and use easy start or petrol, straight into the plenum, starts 1st time.

I get the pump noise when i turn ignition on.

Now got a new battery, that turns the engine over loads, but still wont start.

chuck some more petrol manually into the plenum, via a long straw, starts immediatly. Any ideas why i need to inject petrol/easystart manually

Petrol does go off so how old is the petrol in your tank?

check the fuel filter - but if it runs then that should be fine ! mmm

maybe dirty airflow meters ? does it run well once started ?

try putting ignition on & off 3 times before finally starting, just to ensure fuel pressure is good enough. if you listen carefully youshould hear excess fuel returning into the tank each time you put ignition on.

Also - is the fuel old ? if its more than 6 months old then it will be bad. empty the tank & refil with fresh fuel. Fuel will collect water over as little of 6 months

Many years ago i was a mechanic on light commercials (Transits and smaller lorries), many a time the Easy Start came out, as a last resort, because there was a generally accepted belief "in the trade" that engines became addicted to it and in future struggled to start without it !

Absolutely no logical reason why they should but thats what many people thought ( there again they thought the world was flat and your eyes would pop out if cars ever went over 50 mph ) ?

Drain the old off and put some fresh in.

Norman, you're not far wrong. (note to self, get a job, and fill tank up). hehe

Jed, yup i think it's toooooo old.

Giles, as you say, fuel filter ok, because it runs ok. Air flow meters, very very clean, done them in the summer, 1 was ok anyway, the other covered in oil,fluffy stuff. I will try the ignition on off 3 times, and see what i can hear, did'nt know that the excess fuel flowed back to the tank. Be nice if it went into the exhaust, nice big flame out the back.

Mike, how can i take advice from you. We all know the world is flat. As far as the easystart addiction goes, i've heard that as well, logic???? but it seems true.

Think the answer is, old petrol. Car only starts when i manually inject fresh stuff to do the hard bit (starting) then the old petrol takes over, and does the easy part, of just running.

PS. last time i was on the road, everything used 4star (yes it's been that long)
what do we do nowdays? I just fill a gallon can up with stuff 1.1 ltr eco friendly cars use.

What do you use? Additives? or (can't think of name at mo) that flash stuff, you only get in certain places.

If it's a 290 S2 as per your profile (?) then I just use the higher octane lead free straight from the pumps in mine. Seems to run well on it.
My understanding was that all 290's had lead free compatible heads so no real need for an additive.

Hey its the 5th November next Thursday, no doubt it will P&ss down so you'll need that for the Bonfire.
