I decided to take my throttle body off and clean it up, as outside (and I discovered, inside too) were coated in a thick layer of crap. I've taken one of the butterflies out but the other one is being a bugger and in my ham fistedness I've managed to stripped the head of the screw holding the butterfly in 
I'm gonna buy a decent set of screwdriver bits this weekend cos its pi**ing me off! For some reason the ends of the screws have all lost a thread or 2 which is what I have to tear off to get the screw out. Dunno if it is deliberate but its a pain.
Anyway are there any things I should know before I go and find another M4x10mm bolt to replace it? I intend on using loctite when I put them back in. I definitely don't want a screw in my cylinder!

Thats why they're so tight, I believe the thread is deliberately "damaged " to act as a locking mechanism ?Gerald TVR will probably be along shortly with further advice, I know he had some apart recently
Same problem that I had when taking mine to bits earlier this year. Had to get the dremal out to cut a new groove in one of them at one point. I replaced them with new and as you say, used some loctite.
The butterflies are a pain to put back in and line the holes up again as they are a very tight fit.
Also don't do what I did and re-assemble it all and then realise that you had not put the spring on the end of the shaft that goes through the throttle body. So I had to strip it all down again

I only started this because I though, 'ooo thats a bit dirty'...... Shouldn't have bothered!!
Hopefully it will fix the problem I get with the engine idling at 1500 rpm occasionally. The butterflies don't fully close because of all the gunk around them.
Mushing the ends seems like a pretty effective way of getting them to stay put seeing as they are next to impossible to get out!

Make sure when you reassemble them that you either burr over the ends of the exposed thread or use stud lock to stop them coming out. You don't want a screw falling out and being sucked into the engine. TBH, I can't really see why you'd want to remove the butterfly if there was just gunge around it.
The sprung opening mechanism is fouled with gunk as well. I think the reason it's not closing properly is because of that rather then the butterflies themselves being fouled. I've tried cleaning the mechanism without removal but it isn't much better so really needs to come off and get properly cleaned.

Couple of points. Make sure that you know which side the butterflies are located, they are different one has ab bleed hole an which way round they are fitted.
The ends of the brass screws are peened over for security. The best way to remove is to file the peened ends down to the pivot rod carefully and then they will unscrew easily. The replacement you need are four m4 x 10mm pan headed brass screws. When installed cut off closeish to the pivot rod and peen over the ends. I got mine from Mike Peters, Surplusmpeters@aol.com, Surplus Supplies, 01636636735

Thanks Norman, thats great. I was gonna get steel screws to replace them so good thing you said that.
I filed the end of the screw off and it came out nicely. Also rang round a few local fastener places to see if anyone had any screws but they were all shut. I want to get the car on the road tomorrow as the BBC are still insistent the weather will clear up and we'll have a glorious sunny day down here otherwise I would have used your guy.
Screwfix came up trumps in the end though, they have a pack of 100 pan head M4x12mm for £2.14. They aren't perfect as they need filing to length but its only 2 mm.
For info they are part No. 14678-99 if anyone wants any, otherwise I have 96 spare I can give out!

Thanks chris I filed a slot in the end of the screws and smacked them with my socket set extension bar to open them out. MUCH easier than trying to just flatten the brass!
All fixed and clean now. Throttle does seem to behave itself now but that could just be me as I haven't driven her for a week or 2.
