Door Card Question

Hi All,

I've tried removing my driver's side door card and found 2 small issues:

The first is that the 'hidden' bolt appears to have a very small/fine thread and on it is the tiniest nut (or so it feels as I can't see it) on a very long narrow threaded bolt that's affixed to the door card - does this sound right as i've not good a spanner or socket that small to loosen it, so I can't remove the card as this bolt can't be removed? I'm trying to do this to get to the wooden inserts to have them reveneered.

Secondly the outer bolt (where your elbow is when you drive) appears to have been replaced and the thread it screws into on the door's inner fibreglass has pulled out and worn. So what I need is some ideas on how to either rethread the hole (some kind of butterfly expanding doobery or plug?) or any other smart ideas as the card sides slightly aware from the door and gets a bit draughty when I am driving?

the small nut if i remember correctly is 7mm,iused a 1/4 drive socket and ratchet to remove mine also a 7mm spanner with a piece of string attached.i have cut down the small studs so next time life will be a bit easier kev

You are right with the little nut I think it is M4 you will need a small ring spanner to get it off. Most people replace it with a wing nut so you don't have to bother with a spanner in futute. As for the screw at the rear of the arm rest mine was just a self tapper, if the hole has got to big I would pu a strip of fiberglass at the back of it or even glue a small block of wood over it to give the screw something to bite into.

Hidden nut is reported as either 7 or 8 mm (depends what they had in the parts bin I expect)

I could'nt undo those on the S2 I broke just carefuly levered the door card away from the door carcass, slid in two thin wedges and used hacksaw blade to cut through, tried for hours on door one, door two 10 minutes

Mine was 7mm but not too tight thankfully... I just wound a rubber band around a 7mm socket so that I could grip it enough as the bolt was so long I could not use a wrench on the socket and I found the 7mm ring spanner too fiddly... maybe crack it with the ring spanner then get the socket on it... ?

Thanks all for the advice - i must say the long thin bolt and nut feel smaller than even 7mm (and also very 'shallow' in terms of the nut's depth) but i'll see if I can find a spanner or similar around that size and give it a go over the weekend!

Quite fancy putting some new (i.e. working!) speakers in the doors while i'm at it!

Do you mean the wooden strip that runs across the panel ? Because if so it is Alluminium !!

I understood that these could be removed and veneered (or possibly replaced) with walnut wood?

Paul Banham can repaint them, did mine and my 'walnut' dash absolutly first class job.

I'll have to remove all the wood from the dash, centre console and doors first though - wish me luck!!
