clutch replacement

engine and gear box are out of the car at the moment as iam part way through a body off restoration <outrggers> the car has covered 31k miles the cluth appeared fine before strip down , should i change the clutch or not?? my road car has covered 75k and still has the origional clutch ????

If you look through some of the clutch suppliers sites they give you friction material thickness when new. I would find out this figure and then measure the one you have (assuming it is in good condition). I did this and decided not to change mine as it was only 40% worn, where you make the breakpoint is up to you, in my case I decided a weekends work was worth the saving.

However do change the spigot bearing, apparently they have a habit of failing and only cost £10 (my site has instructions on how I did it including making up a took to extract the old bearing (these instructions have been used by another PHer as well as me to prove them workable)

personnally, now you've got things that far apart I'd change at least the disc. although low mileage its still very old and may have had a fair bit of abuse over the years ( are the cush springs loose ? )
Pig of a job to do when car all back together and IMHO well worth peace of mind for the few pounds involved

Change it no question IMHO, get a 3 part clutch kit and the spigot bearing.
You really don't want to be removing the engine or gearbox any more than you need to!

I personally would remove the gearbox from the engine and have a look at it, if it looks ok put it back as it's an easy job to change the clutch at a later date anyway (only took me and a mate about 1 1/2 hours to do mine including stopping for a brew).
