Wel the time is nearly here to replace Geralds pipes.

The current exhaust is stainless all the way from exhaust port to tail pipe, with manifolds and down pipes only about two years old. But the rest of the system is showing signs of age (a bit like me). The first part of the system, the long oval box, is leaking along the lower seam and most joinst as well. The major issue is a loose something (propably perforated pipe) in the oval bit with is rettling and resonating like crazy. The squarish silencer has been badly bashed about.

Local fabricators could break open and repair wholle system but would cost £250 ish plus VAT etc

I feel it would be better to replace with new but what to do?

1 Replace with standard system
2 Replace with sports system
3 Have original tail pipes
4 Have V8 style tail pipes

Which supplier
A JP Exhausts
B TVR Car Parts

It would be great to recieve advice from you lot as what to do

Thanks

Norman, When I last visited jp exhausts I went there for them to look at my exhaust which was blowing slightly, they said that it was originally from TVR car parts and that the quality was not very good by their standards, and having used jp in the past I know their's are very good, I am planning to replace my exhaust over the winter for one made by them with a higher ground clearance, personaly I like the V8 style tail pipes but it is all personal choice, good luck
cheers.....Tony..

Norm - go for four rear pipes like mine and go fully custom - changes the sound (sounds good but is actually quieter). I would suggest get made to measure and get it made to fit the look you want rather than a standard set, it also allows you to position the joints to areas where clearance is greater

I see from the RT Racing advert in Sprint that they do exhausts either supply or with fit so whilst I don't know about them (other than they do S work so should know the cars well) it could be worth giving Richard a call and see what he says.

I'm having exactly the same dilemma. My exhaust resonates like crazy but I don't want to lose the loud snarl it makes over 3000 revs. Its the main reason I drive the long way to work..!!

I would be really interested in what you decide and how it sounds. I think I'm favouring the V8S look myself.

Cheers...Ralph

I saw some exhausts for an S1 at TVR car parts yesterday, most exhaust work is done for them by 1 guy and they looked nice smooth, clean and pretty original

Not sure where youre based but have recently had a stainless system manufactured by Torqueflow in Birmingham on my 840. Great service and highly recommended

I had the JP system on my S and it was lovely... went from a growl at low speed to a full on howl cloud9

More recently JP did an exhaust for my Mondeo... despite having a V6 in it, a Mondeo has no right to sound this good... http://www.jpexhausts.co.uk/index.htm (mine's the black one). smile

Top notch quality, and nice people to do business with.

I changed from a standard s2 exhaust to a JP manufactured one with V8 style tail pipes earlier this year. My thoughts, FWIW, are:
1. The ground clearance at the back is worse - the pipes stay horizontal for too long after the rear chassis member before sweeping up. This means it grounds when driving through shallow dips (Like going out of a drive onto a moderately cambered road)
2. Exhaust note is more rumbly at low revs but it has lost the howl that I used to get at 3000+. Still not sure that I like it.
3. I needed to fit an "adapater" to the rear mounting as it was presumaby made for a V8s which must have the the rear mount about 2 inches further back than a 2.9. (This is not the cause of 1. above)
4. Build quality is excellent

S4 / V8S had different clearance to the earlier cars... so this may be the reason.

I had my standard exhaust replaced with a TVR car parts one about 6 months ago. The sound is great, loud in second at 30mph (with some pops and bangs) but 'liveable' at 70mph on the motorway. Managed to get 114db on the sound meter at a recent PH meet.

Wherever you get your exhaust from make sure you tell the supplier where the rear mounting point is. I found (through a post on this forum) that there is a variation in the position that TVR put the final mounting point. Some have it on the chassis, some have it on the fuel tank cradle.

The one drawback with the TVR car parts exhaust is that it has a 'cherry bomb' section, this sticks down towards the road at a 90° angle. This means that if you do catch the exhaust it jars on the road rather than scraping along it. If you talk to TVR car parts about this I'm sure you will be able to get a flat angle plate welded between the cherry bomb and the main exhaust tubes to eliminate this.

Hi Norman, I'm not sure if Peninsular still do their exhaust, I had mine fitted years ago, the quality and look are spot on and i'm a fussy git. Had the V8 type and they look fantastic, never ground and the sound is stonking!

This is the 90° angle where the cherry bomb (silencer) joins the tail pipes.

It was the same at the front until I hit something (a tall sharp speed bump, on the way to the club meet)...which was the day I had it fitted furious. Refer to second pic. Fortunately the other S owners were there to tell me that they've all caught there standard exhausts on it so they come another way.

A nice angled plate welded on at 45° would solve the issue...I'm sure TVR car parts would fit it if asked.
