Hi I've just joined the forum as I purchased my first TVR S2 3 weeks ago. Just wondering what the performance should be like? I'm not expecting too much as I know it's nearly 20 years old. The 0-60's about 8-9 secs is that right? Cheers

Mine in standard form clocked between 6.7 (excellent launch) and 7.4 (too much wheel spin) when tested with a GTech-Pro SS. It may not be the most accurate bit of kit but is pretty close and is good for comparisons. Book figure was 6.8 to 60 btw.

What that guy said, you're looking at high 6's. Traction is the main problem, with a lightweight rear and and relatively skinny tyres - it's all about the launch.

Strangely I tested mine at the weekend (only dry day we have had in a while). From standing start to 60 (ish) took between 6-7 secs. This was a guy in the passenger seat with a stop watch looking at the speedo. Now the stop watch and speedo could have both been out (speedo probably was) but this would still be bewteen 7-8 sec which is pretty good for an eighteen year old car.

PS need to do 60 in 2nd gear for the best time, snatching third loses a good second or two.

I'm only getting to 50 in 2nd, think I might have a problem then. Had a Krypton test done but it seemed all OK.

the speedo on the S is very accurate, i had a gps thingy and up to 140 it had 4mph difference

Thanks for all the comments, I think it maybe not right. Top end is 100 at a stuggle & 0-60 is about 9 secs. Any advice, as it's been serviced, Kypton check etc... is it worth chipping?

Forget chipping - your car is running like a dog if the speedo is correct. Are you sure you have a V6 engine in it? wink

First thing I'd check is the timing and make sure it is at 12 BTDC when in service mode. This needs a simple diag tool but others claim you can disconnect the TPS to get it into service mode but I've had mixed results that way.

As part of this you also get to see if there are any error codes logged which might help.

Is it running on all cylinders? On a V6 it is easy to lose a cylinder and not notice but you'd have to lose 2 for that power loss.

Next I'd check the fuel pressure to make sure there is enough fuel for the higher revs. I only put this high up the list because I have a fuel pressure tester.

Shame you're not closer to Norwich, I'd offer to have a look for you.

Providing rev counter is reasonably accurate some simple RPM to speed comparisons should tell if speedo about right.
i think 3000 revs in 5th should be 74mph. in 4th tadge over 60.
this is presuming you're running standard (205 60% 15")tyres

Other option is follow someone along a straight, clear bit of road with some ageed signals for set speeds, side lights on at steady 60 or whatever ?

Cheers Jed,

Definately a V6.

On the Krypton test all the results were OK but I drove it on Sunday when it was dry & it was struggling to keep up with a Fiat Punto! I drive a Insignia 2.8 Turbo as company car & I'd hate to think that states 0-60 at 7.1 secs when my TVR is miles from that.

If the offers stands I'd drive to Norwich if you can provide any advice.

Thanks

Check all the connections and replace the multiplug at the top of the engine:

I would start at the basics again of plugs, leads etc before going too deep.

Mines not, at 70mph on my Satnav the speedo bounces from 110-150 ish, looking at the history that came with the S2 the speedo was replaced at 42000, the car has now done 97000 so presumably it could be another faulty gauge or the pickup device on the gearbox is faulty.

Karl,
If you really fancy the drive to Norfolk (next to Lotus Cars) then I'm happy to have a look. I'll PM you with my availability...

I have quite a selection of spares as well (TPS,ECU,AFM,dizzy etc) so I'm confident that it should be possible to get it going better. Even if the engine is knackered there is a spare one in the shed... smile

Jed,

I think I've finally got to the bottom of it,looks like it's the airflow meters. So I'm now on the hunt for a couple if anyone knows where to find them?

Cheers, Karl
