Having just read Ted's post on helmet bags I though I better find out what reg's I should adhere to for a track day skidlid.

Anyone know what the spec's are that I should be looking for ?

Opinions on open face versus full helmets aswell would be interesting ?

Mine will be fitted with "Luptoff Lugs" aswell ! If you don't know what they are then you'll have to wait to see me on the track !

Cheers

I used to have a cheap open-face helmet, which I thought would be suitable for track days. I now have a more expensive and more comfortable full-face. Some circuits are supposedly fussy about what standards the helmet meets, but I have never been asked.

The Grand Prix Racewear website www.grandpri.com/ is very useful as it contains a list of regs www.grandpri.com/helmetinfo.html
and a guide to measurement

In my opinion if you are in an open car a full face helmet is a must, if in a closed car on open face helmet is OK.

When I was about to start sprinting, I was looking at cheap helmets for £100 or so, then a motor racing friend said to me "how much do you value your head?" My response was to start looking at the best helmet I could afford which was the Bell Sport 2 at just over £300! Today's equivalent is the Sport 3 or the OMP Integra. They retail around the £250 to £300 mark. If you ever go sprinting, make sure the helmet you buy has the SNELL standard 2000 sticker inside as the SNELL 95 standard expires in 3-4 years time.
It is also worth noting that some helmet linings are fireproof but not all. Ididn't fancy a face like Nikki Lauda so I went for fireproof. You can identify fireproof linings by looking at the kite mark sticker also inside the helmet which has the letters FR prefixing the type approval number.
