Engine hoist advice
Discussion
A while ago I asked for advice on an engine hoist in one of the threads on the s series group and LeeBee suggested a half tonne hoist from machine mart but i just wanted to confirm this based on what I have to do in the near future...
I need to pull out the engine and gearbox from my s3 to fix the gearbox and put a new clutch on.
I need to lift the engine up a couple of inches on my v6 mondeo to get to the lower front suspension arm bolts (stupid design, last week I had to drop the subframe by over an inch just to get to the front rollbar bush bracket bolts).
I have a landrover 2.25 which I would like the hoist to be suitable to remove the engine from.
I'm probably going to be moving to a car with a larger v8 at some point. This will either be a tvr with a rover v8 or an old ford v8 or chev v8 (not in a tvr).
The choice seems to be a half tonne or a tonne hoist both at the same price. The advantage with the 1/2 tonne is that the max lift height of 2400mm over 2060mm for the tonne. Also the max lifting weight reduced dramtically as you extend the boom (from 500Kg to 150Kg for the 1/2 tonne and 1000Kg to 250Kg for the tonne).
I guess the main question is, how heavy is an engine/transmission combo for the v6s I have mentioned and rover/ford/chev v8s. I would like to buy the 1/2 tonne for the extra lifting range if the weight is up to it... any advice would be most welcome.
Has anyone bought a hoist from machine mart? If so, do they come with either chains or straps? They sell one tonne lifting straps that are 2m in length for 9.34. Do I need two of these or is one sufficient. Do I need D-rings to attach them to the engine?
Sorry for all the questions but i'd rather find out the pitfalls now rather than with the engine half out
Thanks very much,
Mark

Mark,
When I removed the engine and 'box on my S I did them seperatly but did have the use of a pit which did make it easier. I used my mate next doors hoist - I'm sure it's a Clarke one tonne and it has all the D chains etc. I'd think that the holes in the arm to adjust the arm wouldnt be there unless it could lift the tonne with the arm fully extended. The whole thing folds up and would easily fit into the corner of a garage when not in use.
Chris next door is a full time mechanic and has lifted all sorts of engines of of a wide range of cars with it - not sure he's done a Land Rover though.
Last week he did the anti roll bar bushes on a Mondeo - I saw them, you're right, stupid design
Cheers,
Dave.

Thanks for that. I went for a 1 tonne hoist from machine mart in the end. The rating dropped markedly on the 1/2 tonne crane so I went for the bigger one.
The crane I got was the 1 tonne economy which was 199 pounds inc vat. It folds away very compactly but is bloody heavy when you drop it on your foot trying to get it out of a land rover single handedly.

Nice one!
Spoke to my mate about your Mondeo ARB bushes, he said you'd be better off undoing the engine mounts and jacking the engine up to gain the access you need. If you use the crane to lift, the legs do get in the way a bit.
Cheers,
Dave.
quote:Thanks, it was the lower suspension arm bushes I was doing today. Top tip for your mate if he is doing the same thing: one of the bolts can't be removed because the gearbox is in the way so simply undo the nut, bash the bolt upwards, cut the head off with a hacksaw, drive the bolt back down and when replacing the bolts put it back upside down.
