This is no doubt a numpty question but I'll go ahead and ask anyway smile

Recently I have been getting an occasional squeaking noise from my engine. I've traced this to the hose attached to the PCV valve.
That hose seems to have collapsed under vacuum to the point that it is almost completely flat, so when a vacuum is applied the hose almost completely closes and emits a squeaking whistle. So the questions is should the hose be that shape, or do I need a new one and if so, should I fit a new valve at the same time?

If a breather hose collapses under vacuum, it needs replacing.

The hose from the PCV on the rocker cover to the plenum chamber is a very thin wall hose and looks like it is designed to collapse - mine goes completely flat.

I'd run the engine and remove the PCV and place your thumb over it to seal it. If is still whistles then you have a leak in the pipe I'd suspect.

Hoses with oil fumes in tend to soften over time - when new I think that would have been a hard wall hose, if it collapses it needs replacing. Replace the PCV valve too if you can get one - they don't cost much.

thanks all. thumbup

As I don't have much experience with spannering it's great to get good advice and is much appreciated.

You have no idea how long it took me to figure out that the PCV valve was called a PCV valve biggrin
