Like a lot of us I thought i'd get the car up together before making the trip to Gaydon, last thing Saturday took the car to a local tyre 'specialist' and asked for all 4 wheels to be balanced (steering wheel shimmy between 50 and 70).

During the drive to SCH not only was I having to contend with a mobile shower (I discovered the car leaks a fair bit!!) I heard, on two occasions, an almighty bang, turned out this was my wheel weights flying off when doing speed.

Do you all have stick on weights or have I been unlucky?

The stick-on weights usually stay on well, as the centrifugal force pushes them tight against the rim. It's important to thorougly clean/degrease the rim before sticking them on though. It sounds like it's time to pay the tyre fitter another visit.

Yep, going back this weekend, dread to think what would have happened if a car was close to me when one of these weights fell off at 70+ MPH!

I got my car balanced and tracked yesterday too and the same thing happened to me!! eek Scary as hell, isn't it?! Exactly the same speed as you and both flew off into the bonnet. Luckily no damage. I was told if it had been a 'normal' car with a metal bonnet it would have gone straight through. I took it back to get it checked and the weights on the rim had gone off but obviously the sticky ones were still there. They say that now they cannot use lead weights the quality of the fit is very poor. The new aluminum/alloy/steel ones do not bend into the shape of the wheel like lead did as the structures are more stiff. You can blame environmental regulations for that! It's not totally uncommon for this to happen, especially on wheels like ours but I said load them up with sticky weights. Not great when you have 240 grams on one wheel smash
