Not looking to do anything until next christmas but fancy some more power, the obvious choices seem to be :

- Granada Cosworth BOA 24v (210 Bhp)
- Mustang v6 4.0 12V (I believe this and the explorer evolved from our 2.9 are the engine mounts the same..?)(210 Bhp)
- Cosworth DOHC 2.0 Turbo (Do you think the TVR CC would let me race this as its a bit like the one off racer TVR built..?) (As much power as you want 280Bhp is easy) T5 and 2WD diff would be needed here too.

And the outside entry :

- Nissan 3.5 V6 24v (280 Bhp)

Of these the Ford V6's can be had for £1000 or so sorted.. the cosworth would probably be a upwards of £2500 and would spoil the V6 feeling.. but would be crazy fast.

I like the idea of the Nissan but would be a bigger job to fit.. could do matching gearbox and diff too though.

Or how about a cheep Merc supercharger + aftermarket ecu.?

Anyhow just some thoughts..

Another contender!

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Of course there's always the Rover V8 - which is so popular due to the fact it is so narrow between the heads, and you can pick up an engine very cheap.
Beware of the width of any engine that hasn't been tried before.

........or scrap the ford injection system and fit three, weber DCNF 40 carbs. (although my 2.9 V6 only does about 4 mpg under race conditions so might be a tad expensive to run) wink

How much difference does the Webers make? I know the sound would be great but how much more bhp?
Is that an easy conversion?

Together with a high lift cam, slightly modified 2.8 pistons, a tuned exhaust from 3 port heads, ported and polished inlet manifold, one would be looking in excess of 240 bhp at the fly. Not very drivable for the road and very expensive to run but works well in a race car smile

Mechanically it is an easy job (although I didn't do mine) but it is expensive.

With the Cossy V6 24v -you will have more than 210 as you will ditch the viscous fan, the air con pump and the power steering pump along with a less restrictive exhaust with no cats - so probably nearer 225

I have a friend who makes Dino replicas and he reckons he can get an alfa 3.0v6 to fit no problems.

Yea thanks for the replies for some absurd reason I really want to keep it a V6..

Magpies would the cossie engine make any more with BOB cams fitted..?

Burtons have a 6 x Jenvy TB conversion for the Cossie V6 but at £1.5K its a tad expensive..

I'm off to Vegas soon so will pick up an autotrader and look at Mustang V6 parts.

Cheers

I am waiting to see what 2nd hand VW R36 V6 Passat engines ( 300hp)come on the market at,went out in one the other night, amazing, so is the S3 Audi 2litre, my son has one in a golf Anniversary at present its giving 310hp, and theres lots of scope to up these figures, if you havent driven one try it before dismissing them.

The BOB cams should give between 10 and 20 bhp so I have been told - so all in all with the other items as above should give around 240 - really cheap if you happen to have the BOB cams.

Easiest ways of extra power I have looked into (and boy have I looked) are:

A) Forced induction on original engine with aftermarket ECU with low boost

B) 24v BOA

Both have good points and bad points.

^ You forgot C. Forced induction on a 24v. Easy 300 ponies from 7 psi

Mike, can you do much with the 12v variety? I'm running at about 245bhp with triple DCNF webers. I'm told thats about the limit due to the size of the bearings. Is that the case?

^ I've just built a TT Minker 12v engine, forged low compression pistons, billet rods, ported heads and a pair of GT28 rs turbo's. I hope to see it up towards 500 hp but I'm told the heads are prone to cracking so they will be the weak link.

I've never heard of a bearing issue with any of the cologne engines, they all handle boost or tuning remarkably well. In fact they're pretty unstressed engines as far as the bottom end's concerned.

I owned an S3 and hated it. I reckon if you put that engine in the S series it would ruin it totally. The fact it isn't twin turbo really does open it up to turbo lag in my opinion and I found it rather uncomfortable with the on/off power. The VW V6 on the other hand was a dream and sounded great. In hindsight I should have bought an R32 over the S3. Great spread of torque and would be more similar to the S series but with more power.

Still, the idea of triple carbs on the old cologne sounds fun!

The VW VR engines are cool, great in a Golf mk2 but I would rather an engine designed for longetudinal installation. The idea of the Nissan + box still lingers.. I should see how wide it is.

Re 4 pots yea the VW 1.8T is again a great little engine but would compromise the character of the S IMHO.. the only 4 pot I would consider is the 2.0 Cosworth YB as I know them well even if they are a little on the heavy side. (Cast iron block). but bolts straight to the T5 and there are loads of tuning options out there..

I did think may be supercharge a low cost option for the 2.9 would a merc kompressor SC work..? I am struggling to find anyone that supplies the inlet manifold though, are any std ones available for the 2.9 or do I need to get one made..? Does anyone know how much this is likley to cost..?

I would then use a Megasquirt ECU to control it all.

Cheers
