Hello all

Having sold my Elise to fund my wedding I was seriously missing a car to tinker with so convinced the better half that a 'classic' would be a wise purchase smile

So I have bought a 280S S1 2 weeks ago, chassis appears to be sound, car sounds great (longlife stainless exhaust fitted 5 months ago) and it runs well. I have replaced the bulkhead bearing as the original was very worn, replaced a missing bonnet latch, replaced the tube to the inlet and re-adjusted tickover and rust-proofed one rear quarter, next one will be done at the weekend provided weather holds out!

My future mother in law has offered to re-upholster the seats and I am considering the rest of the interior although the door cards are in good condition.

My first question is concerning the way doors fit into the aperture (see picture below)the bottom of the doors protrude from the body, hinges are solid with no movement but at some time in the cars life the doors had droped due to the wear on the sill, can this mis-alignment be adjusted out and if so how?

Finally, is there a meeting of TVRs in the Gloucester area? It would be good to meet fellow owners and learn more about TVR S ownership

Welcome to the world of S ownership!

The doors, hinges and alignment are a bit of a can of worms - if your door opens and closes OK my advice would be to leave it alone. Sorting it out can be a quick job but it can turn into a very long difficult one if it goes pear shaped. Be warned!

I don't think the door alignment you have is unusual - mine is a bit like that - partly becuase its fibreglass and partly because quality isn't exactly competing with Toyota in a few areas!

Thanks for the reply, S ownership is certainly taking up more time than Elise ownership smile
Having done a search on this forum I was begining to form the impression hinge adjustment is not a straight forward job! I'll leave well alone until door closing becomes an issue

I haven't fiddled with my doors so I'm not an expert - but I think the issue can be that you can rip the brass bobbin out of the fibreglass if the bolt is seized which then gets more interesting.

Saying that I turned my car into this! yikes

Hi,

You'll probably find your closest TVRcc meeting is Cotswold Three Counties http://www.tvrcc-c3c.co.uk/contact.asp.

If you fancy shopping round you may find the Bristol meets are a similar travelling time from you or you could try a Wilts meet - these move around a fair bit but on the Weds 24th of June from 19:45 we'll be at the Vine Tree in Norton (just south of Malmesbury nr J17 on the M4). I think we have four regular S' in Wilts at the moment and the June meet is generally well attended.

My doors both stick out at the bottom. I had one re-hung recently and its still like it...I guess that's part of the S' charm.

Ralph.

Hi Stuart

Welcome to the world of the S, great fun, loads a' noise and this forum provides excellent support.

The doors are a nightmare to adjust properly, I've just had mine done by Adrian@, Exactly TVR in Coventry and he explained exactly how the hinges work and how they are adjusted. Its not simple nor straight forward but he has done a first class job on my car. Happy to share the info either at a C3C TVRCC meeting or S Club Heaven at Gaydon Motor Museum on the 7th of June. It realy would be worth while coming

Welcome to S ownership wavey

I do like the Elise but the S sounds so A LOT better and is much cooler / rarer - you'd better get used to turning heads when you are out in it wink

Thanks for all the replies, I agree the car sounds better than the Elise and is a rarer site on the roads, I found both cars turn heads but the sound alone makes heads turn sooner smile

Also, thanks for the information regarding local meets, I'll see if I can make a few and catch up a few fellow enthusiasts.
