Just been to a roll cage manufacturer and he has quoted £280 for a rear cage (bare metal) - motorsport quality and certified - main hoop, two rear stays a diagonal and harness mounting bar. P&P from Teesside £20 and £50 for powder coating any colour.

Full cage £550 (plus P&P and powder coating if required)

This seems a good price to me

Excellent price.

Before you hand over the money, make sure you know exactly how the bar is going to fit and whether it's going to cause you any problems. For example, I spent months driving round with plastic tubing taped to the inside of the car to find out what worked and what didn't, before the Tower View bar went into production. It is quite a tricky thing to package well.

I'm taking the body over to them late next week while the chassis is being welded and powder coated - I've already discussed the fact that the roof has to be able to be put up/down etc and the chassis is to be extended to the feet of the cage - I will do photos during the intallation

Sounds just like mine which is also certified....

Mine has some additional hoops that bolt into the holes you can see with mahoosive allen keys. They obviously don't fit with the roof up, but give you a bit more protection if you're wearing a helmet. Not a problem for me though - I haven't even got a helmet....... yet! Will have soon cos want to do some trackdays this year driving

I agree! All of my quotes were considerably more but they also included fitting and the harnesses wink

Mick do I understand right in that they will modify your chassis after your powder coat? Does that mean that for those with the body on it must be lifted to modify the chassis to take the roll cage fixing points? Does that apply to the rear only type of cage? I would be interested but I would like to know the extent of the chassis mods (once you know).

I wouldn't have thought you need any chassis mods - mine (from Tower View/Rollcenter) didn't.

Pay attention to how far back the rear hoop is (as far back as possible without obstructing the folding rear stays and as high as possible without rubbing on the roof, get the rear legs as close to the seat centerline as possible (you can't get it perfect because it's a compromise between getting them away from vertical for strength, and getting them aligned with the seat. Get the uprights far enough to the outside to avoid restricting rearwards travel of the seats. You should still be able to use the original inertia-reel seat belts. (If you don't achieve this then your harness needs to be E-marked which very few are.)

Wouldn't it be better to take the chassis and body to them and get them to fit the cage to the chassis rather than modifying the chassis to fit the cage? I guess I've missed something...

Body tub now at roll cage manufacturers - once back I'll take piccies

The chassis is always going to have to be modified to give mounting points to the rear stays and if fitting a full cage mountings for the front legs
as niether of these have plates near.

It may be ok for a plate to be bolted to the underside of the fibreglass to pick up the bolt positions if you dont want to weld with the body in close attendance.

So what's the standard procedure for fitting a roll bar?

Do you need to take the body off? Any idea of all in costs?

My S is hopefully off for its second track outing next week and I must admit I'm a tad uncomfortable with the 'just duck' approach to roll over protection!

Hi

I've had the first fitting of the cage - just needs a couple of minor mods - but I'm concentrating on the chassis and suspension at the moment.

The cage fits well and the front half can be removed (unbolted) for normal road use if necessary - leaving the rear hoop and stays behind the seats.

The main hoop fits where the inertia reels mount and the shoulder seatbelt mount. There are mounts for the full harnesses. There may be enough room to mount the inertia reel to the base of the cage but this has not been looked at yet. The rear stays mount to extra plates welded to the chassis which aligns with the rear bulkead (just infront of the petrol tank.

I'll post some pitures when there is enough good weather for me to unwrap the tub which is outside while I work on the chassis.

Sounds interesting.... the prices were really good. How much, if you don't mind me asking, was it for them to fit just the rear roll bar?

With your inertia seatbelts gone didn't Green V8S say you need a harness which is E-marked or something? No idea what this means but was it/will it be difficult to find?

Best of luck with the continued project - would love to see the photos when you can as I'm flying out of my seat due to the old springs and really want a harness and a bucket biggrin

I have just been quoted £725+vat for full spec roll hoop with diagonals and harness bar, fitted, from Guigielmi motorsport (or however you spell it)...we will see what it actually costs, but have been told there are no major issues with my non standard seats. Seemed pretty reasonable to me.

Can (and often do!) thoroughly recommend Guglielmi's. My car used to belong to Dave who works there until he sold it to me. While he owned it he fitted the roll bar (pic above) and a load of other mod's. Your car will be in very safe hands wink

E marked harnesses are ones with a pushbutton release

FIA harnesses have a twist release.

Both types readily available from motorsport outlets around the country

it is strange that the higher spec FIA ones are not road legal in this country especially as most stage rallies have some sort of road mileage

Bumped this to the top as I'm keen to inversion-proof my S3C in the next couple of months.

The Gugliemli version seems the best bet to me, any reason for not taking this approach ???

main problem is probably distance - having measured up the tub / chassis on my S1 the nearside and offside are not exactly the same and so my cage manufacturer says he will only guarantee good close fitting if he has your car. He is located in Teesside. However I believe he is cheaper by a reasonable margin.

Do we have pics of the two different cage versions from the teesside outlet ?
