Have a new set of mirrors to fit.
Done search and found loads of stuff about which mirrors will fit.
No description of how to remove the old manual rabbit ear type.
Would like to take them off in one piece.
Are they bolted or bonded into the doors?

I found it impossible to remove the rabbit ears in one piece: They swivel on a ball joint, whose plastic socket is glassed into the door. You can swivel the joint out of its socket, and the remains of the socket can be broken away, then the the edges can be ground down using a dremel. I used MX5 mirrors which completely cover the remains of the socket.

BTW, the rabbit ears look similar to the mirrors on a Ferrari 308/328. There's possibly huge money to be made by selling them to a 'rari owner wink

The mirror is a ball and socket affair, spray with wd40 and move it around so it is fairly loose then apply a bit of pressure and it should slide off the ball. The part that is attached to the door is held on by the two screws and possibly a bit of sealant, if you apply a bit of pressure it should push into the door cavity. You may be able to retreve it by just removing the speaker and having a grope around inside the door.

Just had a look under the flex and there seem to be two small screws on the outside of the stalk.
Will have a go removing the mirrors tomorrow.

So WD40 on the ball joint and pull the mirror body off.
Then remove the speakers to gain access.
Take the small screws out and work the stalk free of what ever is sticking it. Hope Sikoflex wasn't around in 1990.

Did you find screws on the outside of the stalk or on its socket?

The screws have been taken out, it is bonded in but have to get the car out of the garage to open the door to get a proper view inside. As it's blowing a gale will leave for another day.

Some of the laquer came off as well frown

When I got to this point with mine, a swift tap with a ball pein and a tiny bit of leverage and they dropped into the door no worries

Got the mirrors on now smile

A bit of twisting and a tap with a hammer and the stalks drop into the door, if the steel ball is still in its a bit tight past the window.

Bridged the hole on the inside with glass matt, topped up with P40

Your right Kevin - Mk2 Ford Escort, Mk1 Fiesta and Mk2 Capri wink

Tried to get hold of the Black cab ones but there like hens teeth!

The Ford ones are easier to find and suit the car well.

Hello all,

Thank you for telling how the mirror's are mounted and how to "remove" them.
I'm going to install the Citroen CX mirrors....instead of the rabbit ear type

Any ideas?

Cheers

Olav,

Cars with the Citroen mirrors have a circular recess that they fit into so I don't think they'll work with the standard door. Certainly the rabbit ears wouldn't fit the ones with CX mirrors.

Hallo all,

Long time no see: yes that's right!! I am back! :-) :-)

Yep...I know...but....I....bought them a while ago. The Citroen type mirror's.
SO THEY HAVE TO GO ON!!! YES I'M SHOUTING :-)
I am afraid I will have to recreate the circular recess.

Cheers
