Hi There,

The intermittent mode on my wipers has carced it. Now the damn things wipe continuously for about 3 repetitions, before abandoning the blades in the middle of the screen for a while. After a while they take a bit of an interest and maybe do a couple of wipes before stalling again. You get the picture.

For the last couple of months I've been doing the intermittent thing myself. Finger Up, Finger Down, Finger Up, Finger... but it's not as much fun as it sounds.

Has anybody had any experience of similar problems (and found a resolution)?

Thanks,

WG

Hi Wonky

Sounds to me like a motor issue not the switch but if you want to PM me with your address I can post a spare switch for you to try. This thread might help

If its the motor Adrian@ Adrian Venn Exactly TVR can help

Or the relay, I've had a similar thing before with another car (not TIV) and it was the relay timer that had become faulty.

Thanks Guys. Yeah - it certainly seems like some sort of timing issue. But whether timing is done by a circuit within the switch or within the relay, I haven't a clue. Does anyone know?

Thanks,

WG

Hi Wonky

Had one of the switches apart - no circuit there for sure

Right - so the circuit is either in the fuse box, with the relay (say), or on the motor.

Having the same problem, and your right it does become a real pain flicking the switch all the time. I seem to remember that on older wiper motors there was a mechanical type system of brass contacts to make the delay work. Its one job i keep putting off for fear of disturbing all the the other 'delicate tvr' wiring.

I'm pretty sure that it is a relay affair but it is buried in the dash somewhere. With the engine off, ignition on and if you can get it to work without the wipers on the window you may be able to hear the tick when the relay engages.
If its gone intermittent the 2 likely causes within the relay are a broken solder joint (often on the main terminals) or the capacitors have dried out and gone too far out of spec for it to work (replace the relay).

When you work out where it is post some pics!

Anyone thinking of terminals on the motor itself thats for the self parking when you switch the wipers off.

Just got home to look at the "Bible". Steve Heath doesn't say anything specifically about this problem but does suggest that most problems are related to the Wiper Relay or the self parking mechanism.

I can see this is going to take some digging - particularly if the relay isn't part of the fuseboxy tangle of wires underneath the glove box. Eeeek!!

Thinking about it, you can probably test self park just by cancelling wipping half way through a normal sweep - it should continue to the end of the sweep.
You'd think I'd know whether this works or not - but when you have this sort of a problem - it kind of plays with your head as you end up timing your cancels for the intermittent thing. Honest!

the parts schedule indicates three types of motor were installed, the first two in early cars up to june 88, the third type thereafter.

the wiring diagram indicates an intermittant relay in V8 models but not in V6 models....nothing to say that your system isnt unique...so best of luck.

Hi Andy ~ the bible is a book by Steve Heath "The TVR S Series" and there are two editions, the second being more comprehensive, but either is better than nothing in most cases. They come up on ebay from time to time and i think may be available from the TVRCC (might be wrong on that)

first edition is ISBN 0 9530335 0 3
second edition is ISBN 0 9530335 4 6

I have a tatty first edition you could loan or buy if you cant get your hands on a copy.

K wink

Well guess what - self park doesn't work on any wiper setting. Self park is a switch that keeps power going to the wiper motor after wiping has been cancelled so that it continues to the end of the sweep.

I smell a water leak and corroded park switch / terminals...
