Hi pick up my S2 last night gone to show a mate the engine bay this morning and I can't get the bonnet open. Compared to other cars (not TVR) there is no tension in the lever. Am I missing a trick? Help.

Other small issues include the rev counter cutting back to zero at 4500rpm when driving cold and not working at all when hot (just bounces and works when not in drive and at tick over) again Help!

Hi Andy congratulations on your purchase and welcome to the forum

sounds like your release cable is at fault and there have been a couple of posts on this recently so read down the topics and you should find some info on how to open your bonnet, or do a search for bonnet release...

I'll leave the electrics to the experts who will be along in a minute to advise I'm sure

Hi Andy

First of all welcome to the forum. They are a very friendly and helpful lot on here and you will get lots of support. The S2 is a smashing car, I've had mine about a year and a half, loads 'a noisey and some times buttock clenching fun. It will bring a smile to your face.

Firstly bonnet, sorry for the stupid question but are you pulling the correct lever? I got caught out the first time and pulled and pulled the boot release under the steering column. The bonnet release is to the left of the steering column and a bit of a reach down.

If you look on the pic od the stearing column and its support above the lever is the rusty thing with a nylon bush thing. The bonnet has two catches at the rear of the bonnet on the wings, these are connected together with something like a b1cycle brake cable which runs over the nylon bush. The bush is on an excentric cam and as you pull the lever tension goes to both catches and the bonnet, hopefully, pops open. With the steering column covers and the dashboard and seats in place its difficult yo see everything, just shove your head upside down under the steering column on the gearbox side and all should be revealed.

Rev counter, well this is a comon problem often caused by a faulty yellow connector just by the ignition switch. Very common for this to have bad connects or even burn out

Check this out first and either have it removed or replaced. Once I had sorted mine, see above, many odd and curious electrical issues went away.

Good luck, post some pics of the car andkeep us posted and there are a number os S's in the north west, might be an idea to give a better indication of your location (but I would not privide your address on an open forum) and perhaps someone local to you might be able to help

Thanks for the quick response. Definitely pulling the right lever, but it is very slack, so it looks like I will have to start getting under the skin and disconnecting the bonnet (read some of the other posts). Will be just the excuse I need to get out the house!

Thanks for the tip about the connector I will have look tonight. I got the car from a PH seller up near Hartlepool and its home is near Bedale now. I would be interested if there is a local meet to swap and compare notes.

It was 40miles to pick the car up and 80 to get it home.... must have taken a wrong turn on the way! Fantastic noise and fun down the Dales backlanes still smiling now.

So Cummon Andy - who did you buy it off ? you need to update the "S2 Owners List" in the wiki at the top of this forum - maybe if your car is there already you just need to change the owner name to you... ?

Have you joined the TVRCC too ? there are regular events and meets within NY and with other regions for runs out etc...

not sure if you will be able to open this if you are not a member but heres the NY area site...

http://www.tvrcc-north-yorks.co.uk/

it says...
The "summer" meetings are the second thursday of the month -7pm
(April - Sept)

"Winter" meetings are the second Sunday of the month -noon
(Oct-March)

See you at the Chequers pub, Bilton in Ainsty

hi andy welcome,
same as above, but obviously, in an emergency, if your cable is kaput, you can pull the cable with pliers or such, not recomended if cable is ok, this
should open the bonnet,

try contacting the previous owner, he might of had a special (tvr) way
of opening it

Will update the register and get some photos taken I have also updated my garage on here.

This evenings update.....

Took the car to the tyre dealers up the road from work and got the tracking and balancing checked had lost a 60g weight off the front passenger wheel. It now drives much much better especially 60+

Been for a long drive tonight and have got the snagging list of problems and had a look at the areas you guys suggested so now have more of an idea so more help or advice would be much appreciated.

The yellow connector under the steering column has already been replaced by what looks like some decent DIY spade connectors they check out on the AVO meter.

The car seems to be running a little hot 90-100 (it is a V6) and I have a feeling the fans are not kicking in (but can't open the bonnet to check as waiting for some help to remove as don't want to do something stupid with the pristine bonnet!) They kicked in when I pulled up at home

The water and oil temp go up when the lights are switched on!

The rev counter cuts out at 4500rpm or sooner. At one point on the A1 the rev counter was oscillating with the indicators (which was quiet amusing and like a Top Gear challenge!)

I have a feeling these are all related I have checked the fuse box out and all seems normal.

Any ideas?

you say related, hehe, yes they are........TVR RELATED.

apart from the bonnet, i can't help, but someone will,
i did'nt have much luck with the search on here, but i did do
a lot of reading, there's so much. You even read stuff that
you did'nt think you needed to do, until you're in the car next
time, and think oh yeah

On my old S2 the cable slipped of the pulley one day. Relatively simple to get it back on by undoing the bolt through the middle and removing it.

As long as the cable hasn't snapped (pretty rare I think) you should be able to get it open. Worst case scenario you'll have to release the catches from inside the footwells. I think (if I remember correctly) that you can reach the catches from inside the footwells.

Thanks again for the advice everything seems to be as it should for the lever and till no joy have found the catches so they will be coming off this weekend.

Drove my everyday car this morning to work for the first time after picking the S up. Although alot easier to drive it doesn't leave you with that stupid grin (a collegues words!) which I have been wearing since Wednesday

Welcome

When you get the bonnet open, check out the earth connections to the chassis, these are behind the front wheels on the cross member from the top chassis rail down to the outrigger leading edge, both sides, while you are at it the strap between engine and chassis (offside IIRC) and the chassis and the battery also could do with a clean and a tighten, this will help remove any resistance in the circuits and cut out any back feeds tht might be occuring. Next step, i'd work through any connectors between the oscillating gauge and the component its giving a readout for.

Wiring diagrams are downloadable....i'm sure sure a nice person who can remember where from will post a link shortly.

Victory is mine! Got the bonnet open yesterday and it only cost me 2 knuckles worth of skin. Those that said it was a pig your were right. Anyway not a lot wrong so plenty of grease later it is working fine now.

It would seem there is an earth fault somewhere as I re tightened and repaired a couple of suspect looking cables in the steering column and the rev counter now cuts out at 6000rpm before going to zero. The battle is won but one suspects the war is not. Gonna look at the earthing straps within the bonnet as recommended next!
