Hi

Just removed my Gaz shocks to replace the springs - how do I get the old spring off. The adjusting 'ring' won't come off the bottom due to a stud & the damper adjustment screw.

Help would be appreciated.

Cheers

You should be able to wind the "height adjuster" ring and locking ring down until they become loose around the bottom of the shock, the upper spring mount (the black "plate" with a slot in it) then slips down and disengages from the shock central piston tube and can be removed (slides out through the slot), the spring then just lifts off the top.

That's how my Gaz shocks went together anyway.

The locking ring (height adjust ring) won't go past the damper adjustment screw at the bottom of the shock to enable me to loosen the top 'plate'??????

Any ideas?

PS. I seem to have 10" length springs on my shocks and the replacements I've been sent are 8" - does this matter, or should I send them back & request 10" springs??

It shouldn't need to go past the adjuster knob, mine just come off the bottom of the thread and then rattle around between the thread and the adjustment knob, which gives just enough room to pull the spring down and free the top plate. If yours won't come off the thread then they must be a different design to mine (mine are 18 and 3 months old front and rear respectively and are the same design althoughthe valving is different).

If this won't work I'd ring Derek at Absolutely Shocks for advice, he is really helpful and friendly.

If you've wound the adjuster off as far as it will go, but the spring is still under compression, you'll have to use a spring compressor to get them off.

The new shorter springs shouldn't give you the same problem.

Make sure the tool will fit in between the spring coils, I have two sets and neither will fit mine in the S3!!!! I used two ratchet straps to compress my coils when winding on the preload off the car - but take care if you use this method
