Has anyone replaced the foam in their seat squabs? I have just been reading about how it's done in a classic car mag and it looksa really easy. I just don't know where to buy a pre cut piece of foam. The mag were doing a TR7, so used Rimmer Bros, but obviously an S is not a TR. Anyone know a supplier?

Try your local Yellow Pages/Google for "Upholsterers" ... they will probably sell you something if you know what size and density of foam you want... small outfits will probably have experience of "one-off" jobs already

K wink

I thought the 'S' seats were TR7, they look very similar to me?

Dont forget its not a flat slab of foam, its raised front and sides and should be moulded. Adrian@ can supply, he has them made (for the M as well I think)

I've seen foam carved with an electric carving knife before - not entirely sure how successful this is though.

I was just talking to Ketvrin on Friday about how saggy my seat was (!).
I hadn't realised just how bad the driver's seat was. The bar at the base of the backrest knacks the small of my back so I sat on the cushion that my son usually uses to see over the dash. What a difference! It is the best modification I've made for ages!

I'd love to get the seats reupholstered as they are split as well as saggy, but I fear the price will be prohibitive. I will take out the driver's seat and see what can be done. I may be able to repair the splits in the cover from underneath. If there are any springs I can replace them. I will have a hunt around for some fresh foam. If anyone finds a good source please let me know. If I find a supplier I'll post it here.
Cheers
Tim

I've just been out to the car and taken the seat out

The seat cover is held on with 5 clips that easily come off.
As you can see the base of the seat is supported by 2 elastic/rubber strips and a grid of wires on springs.
The foam pad seems to be a two part construction. The front and sides is shaped but the base is more or less a rectangular block.

Cheers
Tim

Tim, the 2 rubber strips are from a previous repair. The wire strips are what have broken in the past.
Adrian@
edited to say ...that the 2 pieces of corded rope are part of the connection to the centre of the seat and pull the from the corners of the central stitched panel to give the seat shape...I have no picture hosting to show you a picture of a new seat foam.

Thanks Adrian.
How do you get the headrest off?
If I can get the covers off I can use them as a pattern to make new ones.
I've just found a supplier up the road ( Newcastle) who supplies leather at a couple of quid a sq. foot.
Cheers
Tim

Headrests....I have not got an S in today to look but from memory, you have to press in a spring steel barbed clip in from inside the tube, by opening the back up.
Adrian@
Tim, did you see my last edit..

Yes Kev, that may be a problem!

Adrian ~ are you saying that the corded rope is attached to the stiched panel of the seat cover and is then threaded through the cushion and attached to the wires?
That would seem to make sense but wasn't obvious from the remains of mine.

Is it OK if I put up the pictures on here of your foam cushions? People may be interested to see what they should look like!

Cheers
Tim

Tim, As such yes, Yours have been messed about with...but the stitched panel is drawn down to the wire frame to give the seat its shape. I rarely see these stripped down, but my trimmer would not work with the 'dead' foams, so I made moulds to make the foams and supply him with the foams for each job.
Adrian@
The later S3 and V8s seats have different bases and are available via multipart.
OK to the pictures
ETA Multipart have no stock MAR 09

you might not need to re foam your seats, i put my foam in the washing machine and replaced the broken wire strips with old fashioned wire coat hangers.
replace your wires then sit on your seat, to see the improvement.
i also took off the reclineing lever, and gave it a good clean & oil,
it was rusted solid.
by the way, old fashion wire coat hangers are nearly as rare as sherpa
indicators, took me ages to find some
