Hi

I have just taken delivery of new springs for my Gaz shocks (the old ones are apparently the wrong strength).

Before I go taking off the old ones please can someone advise whether I will need some sort of devise to compress the new springs to get them on the shock??

If so, what do I use and where do I go to get what I need.

Also, I don't have a ring spanner - is this something I can just pick up at my local halfords??

Many thanks in advance.

Cheers
Jaye

You wont need a spring compressor for coilys or should'nt do. You will need a C spanner though, I doubt halfords do them its a motorsport thing. GSF might do though.

On my avo's they had a 6mm locking grub screw.
I took that out and put a 6mm bolt in it to turn it - I didn't need a C spanner.

Thanks guys thumbup

Just really wanted to check on things before I started taking things apart at the weekend.

Will check for the grub screw, although I have sourced somewhere to get a ring spanner if required.

Thanks again

Chris,

The gaz arrangement is different (no lock screw but a second locking ring - I've had both types) and you do really need the C spanner if you are going to get any real preload into the spring. Derek (Ab shocks) supplied one with my set of coil overs as part of the package.

Hi,
just interested in why you are saying your springs are wrong ?

I took the car for it's MOT and (although it passed all OK) the guy at the garage - who has seen the car for the last 4/5 years spotted that the front springs were at their max compression. Strange when I was told when I bought the car that they had just been fitted - that would make them 6 years old - and I've only done 7,000 miles scratchchin

We think (although yet to be proved) that the wrong strength springs were fitted before I got the car.

Once I get them off at the weekend I will be able to confirm (or deny) this theory.

I have spoken to Gaz and they have advised that the front springs should be '375' and I have ordered a new set of springs - '450' for the front as will be sprinting the car.

Will let you know the outcome or investigations after a weekend of playing with springs and ride settings the weekend smile

Cheers

Was the sump dragging in the road? I'm puzzled how you could get the front springs coil bound or sitting on the bump stops without it being painfully obvious that there was no ground clearance and the wheels are chewing through the wheel arch liners.

To me the car is fine - no grounding or bottoming out (even when sprinting last year) - it's just that my MOT bloke said there was no real 'gap' between the spring spirals - therefore giving 'no room to travel' (all technical speak to my simple 'unmechanical' mind).

It's going to be interesting to see what occurs on Sat when I take the springs off - to see what 'strength' is actually fitted.

If my MOT guy turns out to be talking out of his perverbial backside & the recommended 'strength' of coil is fitted (for road use) then he won't be seeing the car again...

Will let you know the outcome.

It's possible your mechanic is correct, but it seems very strange for the springs to collapse that far (especially as both sides have presumably failed in the same way).

Have you got the original rising rate springs (or equivalent) fitted? These are dual rate springs with one third of their length coil bound at normal ride height. It makes the springs softer in droop than in bump, which gives a softer ride and lower ground clearance for a given energy absorption.
