S2 Oil Pressure Readings
Discussion
Hi to all
I have just fitted a new oil pressure sender unit as I was getting some mad readings with the old one. In the bible it states oil pressure values of 50-70psi for the V6 engine (presumably when new) but mine are nothing like that.
From cold it's reading 35-38psi approx and when warm 18-20psi @2500rpm.
So my question is to all you 2.9 V6 owners are these values acceptable on a 20 year old engine that's covered 96000 miles? I have nothing to compare it to as I only recently purchased the S2 with the faulty oil pressure sender unit.
The oil 10w/40 Mobil 1 and filter was changed last week.
Thanks

Thats a bit low but it could be the sender - I think there are 3 different types.

Hi Chris, I ordered the oil sender unit from TVR Car parts, the old one I removed looked original as it had the black plastic sleeve fitted over the metal casing plus the old one had a threaded post that the connector slipped over and was then kept in place by a small nut and washer, the new one has a male spade terminal so I had to crimp a female connector onto the wire.Chris

I think the 3 types look identical - and don't count on any TVR supplier sending you the right part - not being critical of them TVR fitted whatever gauge/sender pair was handy at the time!
Think of it this way - if your car didn't have a gauge would you be worried?
How does it sound at startup?
If its pretty smooth I'd say you have nothing to worry about.
If it rattles a bit till the oil pressure gets going it may be a bit tired.

According to the Ford manual, the pressure should be at least 1 bar(15psi) at 800rpm, and at least 2,45 bar (36psi) at 2000rpm. (all at 80'C).
I don't know what mine is at idle, but when running it's somewhere around the 50 psi mark.
Your values seem too low. Are you sure you have the right oil pressure sender? Maybe it's worth having the pressure checked with a calibrated oil pressure gauge by a garage, before drawing any conclusions.

I bought it from TVR Car parts and gave them the correct car details so it should be the correct one. I'm have two new tyres fitted tomorrow so once they are done I will give it a blast and make note of the readings as I have only run the engine on the drive since fitting the new sender.I don't know what mine is at idle, but when running it's somewhere around the 50 psi mark.

I had the same trouble with TVR car parts...not that I blame them mind.
My original was leaking and the gauge bounces a bit at idle. I checked the impedence of the old one, and the new one from TVR car parts and they were much different. Thy replaced it FOC but it still wasn't the same impedence. I ended up putting the original back on.
My car reads about 60 psi from cold and doesn't drop much when idling cold. Once it is hot, it reads 50PSI at anything above 1000 revs, but drops back to about 35-40 at idle when hot. The car has done 52000 with very regular oil changes and sounds sweet.
Hope that helps

I replaced the sender on my S about 3 years ago and the new sender (a brass coloured one with a spade end connector) was faulty so replaced under warranty and whilst that one worked it was so slow to move the gauge - 15 secs to get moving when starting up - and then read badly that I sent it back as well and eventually got a secondhand one which so far - (bad feeling here when I say that!!) - reads fine .... with Millers CFS 10/60 its over 50 when hot (at about 3k rpm) and about 20 or so when idling.

Just had my new rear tyres fitted so once the mobile fitter had finnished I took it for a 10 mile blast, the oil pressure readings did not go above 38 psi when hot at over 2000 rpm and dropped as low as 10-15 psi at idle, the engine still feels strong and pulls well and is not a smoker, from what others are saying on here it's a bit pot luck as to which oil sender unit you may receive.
When I changed the oil I was unabe to get /50 oil so ended up using Mobil Super S 10W/40 Semi Synthetic.
Perhaps I should just get on with enjoying the driving experiance of the TVR and not worry about the pressure readings!

Mine has about the same mileage and shows just below the 50 mark above 2000 rpm and drops to around 27 on tickover. However when cold the gauge does not register at all ... It takes about 2 miles to get warm enough to register and the needle flails about for a second or two just before giving me peace of mind... once up to temp its as steady as a rock...
