Hello everyone, after spending a whole year deciding on what car to buy I finally came full circle and bough a 1988 S1 on Sunday!! I joined the forum a year ago to learn about the S but then got the idea of a Griffith, then a BMW 840ci, then an Audi A8...I really don't know what I was thinking! (Maybe suomething to do with the price of big engined cars these days) I pick her up tonight, all being well. She is advertised on the pistonheads classifieds - white, biscuit interior...I love it!

Anyway, I'm so excited about the whole thing that I probably shouldn't start writing a thesis until I pick her up but I need some advice pretty urgently and really hope you guys can help? I'm going to be using her almost daily and I will keep it in an underground car park during the day but on the street in the evening so I need a car cover. I really liked the Leven cockpit cover but I spoke to them just now and they have none in stock and haven't made any for a year! It would require 6 orders for her to make some up...I don't imagine there is that level of demand. I'd really like the cockpit cover as I can carry it, it won't scratch like a full cover and allows the bodywork to breath etc... Anyone got any advice as to where/who I can purchase something like the Leven one asap?

Thanks guys in advance!
Pierce
P.S. I'm so keen I'm thinking about going to the Ace cafe TVR night tomorrow - anyone going?

Hi Pierce and welcome. The S is a great car and you'll enjoy her lots.

I've no advice on the car cover I'm afraid, but certainly a cockpit cover would be a good interim idea and something you could use when we have the blisteringly hot summer (whichever year that might be hehe).

Make a note of the date for S Club, if you haven't sorted anything out by then, there will be a good number of people to pick their brains.

Thanks Dave - I have indeed made a note of that and will be there! Met Office says no rain till Saturday here in London so I have a few days to find something!
I have a motorbike cover that could be used in an absolute emergency I suppose...somehow

Hi Pierce

I had a 'shower cap' made by a local trimmers, see here

Happy for you to copy the idea, they tell me now they would charge £100 contact Derek at http://www.bromsgroveautotrim.com/. I would be happy to lend it back to them as a pattern.

Welcome to the wonderful world of S ownership

Might do if mine's back from the TVR Centre by then. Having the last auto electrician's handy work put right by the professionals!

Whereabouts are you if you're near the Ace? I'm in North London (Enfield) and there are a couple of S owners in Herts.

I don't put the top up unless I have to, so I use one of these: Convertible Top Cover

"Waterproof & Breathable / Straps to wheels and under body / Semi tailored shape for close fitting / Eliminate moisture getting into your classic / Silver Grey in colour to reflect UV and Heat.
Tailored for convertibles to cover the cabin section of the car. Many early convertibles do not seal 100% and moisture will seep into the vehicle. The cover is small enough that it can be carried in the car to events for protection if caught in the rain.
The top cover is the same material as the Moltex outdoor car cover without the fleece lining as this is not necessary against the soft hood of the car. The cover attaches easily with webbing straps. Perfect also for keeping frost off glass in the winter."

Size is "Small (TC100)". Is very lightweight, but waterproof and packs away very small. I cut off the central underbody strap, but reinforced the four adjustable corner straps (these attach to the wheels via soft plastic hooks).

As you can see, it works just as well with the roof down.

In fact my S2 is sitting outside my office now with it's cover on - first time I've used the S this year!

Guys, thank you all very much for the prompt replies! It is also very nice to see some other white cars out there. I never thought I'd buy white but it looks great on this car IMHO.

Both of those covers look okay and I was about to get more details but at lunchtime I phoned up Covercraft to see what they had on offer and the chap has convinced me over 45 mins (!!) why one of their covers will not scratch my car, will offer excellent protection for the whole vehicle and be very easy to roll up and dump in the boot. I especially liked the way you can fold it wet/damp and it won't get mouldy. No belts and buckles so no potential for tampering hands on the streets to scratch it too. Not cheap mind you but I think the car should get the best if I want to keep it good and leave it outdoors. Only downside is 2 week delivery but I recall I have a lovely ground sheet I haven't used for a while just in case!

Thanks for all your help already chaps.

By the way, I live in South West London but work in Chelsea so Ace is only about 15 mins away.

I'll head down to the Ace tomorrow if I get the car back, but it looks somewhat doubtful.

Looking ahead if you fancy venturing north of the river next month the PH North London meet is usually good:

Anyway, welcome to the fold. PH is very inclusive, as is the TVR scene on a whole. It's also a mine of information, way better than the usual cliquey one make car clubs. thumbup

Thanks for the pictures! Cover looks good but they're already making mine now as it is on a fast track order. I'm glad I got a full cover because it rained this morning (slight) but it was enough to test the roof...it failed. Had about a tea spoon on the transmission tunnel, just behind the little pocket there. Luckily it was a recent shower and didn't have time to soak in. I think I've read about the targa panels sometimes having a poor seal - this may well be the case. I'm going to take down the roof after work and have a look then put it back on and see if it helps. I checked the boot and there seemed to be a little bit of water on one of the targa covers...not much but I think it probably came in through the aerial. Going to use the ground sheet tonight but no idea how to affix it as it literally is only a sheet of plastic. So, in light of all this I probably won't make it to the Ace tonight as I'd hoped.

The drive in to work was fantastic! bounce
