hi all

My S lives outside and today is the first chance I've had to drive it for 2 weeks.

Usually it idles around 1000rpm but sometimes when not used for a while it 'pumps' between 900 and 1100 for a bit until warmed up.

Anyway, today it bounced between 900 and 1800 which is far worse than it has ever done before. After 20 mins or so it is now back to sitting steady at 1000.

Anything to worry about? Or is it just cold and misrable and requiring driving more often?

I'm not a V6 expert but I think it could be the idle valve sticking - the round bit on the side of the plenum bend.
It may settle down with use - otherwise I think you need to take it apart and clean it.

THanks. Sounds reasonable.

Left it idling once I got home and it was back bang on 1000.

The service is due soon and I'm thinking of getting the car fully checked over at Topcats. It just not been right since last June when it had the overheating problems.

Mine runs really rough on tickover if it hasn't been used for a couple of weeks, but always settles down after about 10 mins driving, then its fine if used regularly.
Must admit though 1800rpm is a lot higher than mine goes to, mine usually rises from the normal 900 up to about 1100rpm.

Have you had the battery disconnected recently or has the battery been allowed to go flat? The ECU loses its active settings and has to rreturn to default fuel and ignition maps, until it "re-learns" various sensor inputs etc - on mine, that causes the symptoms you describe until it's been hot (ie right to fan-cutting-in hot)
