how much of a gap is deemed normal between the top of the door skin and the window glass on a s1?

Thanks

Mike

Can't tell you exactly, but if it's any help there are three reasons (as far as I'm aware) that a gap could be larger than it's supposed to be:

  • The electric window end-stops need adjusting
  • The door has dropped
  • The roof is too high (somebody fitted Chimera struts on mine, badly, and as a result the hood is fundamentally a couple of mm too high)
That said, even with a good 5mm gap in places, mine miraculously stays dry.

Have you got a rubber seal there?
Ignoring the seal for a moment the gap on mine is not tiny.

it was on the car I was looking at
The gap in question is not between the glass and the roof but between teh glass and door skin,it looked at least 10mm in places. If anyone has a nice picture looking down on to the door, my only thought was there may have been a seal missing.

Inside or outside?
Either way the gap on mine it pretty big - it has a seal on the outside but it only just touches the glass in the middle - fibreglass isn't known for its precision qualities.
I don't have a seal on the inside and I don't know if there should be one or not - my concern was if it is missing and I fitted it my window would be even slower!

Mine have seals on the outside only, but they touch all the way along the window (and as Chris says above they slow the window - add some silicon spray and the window speeds up but you get a smear across it). The only gaps on mine between the windows and seals is at the very front upper edge where the roof seal is squashed by the window frame as the door is shut moving the seal back from the glass for about 2-3cm.

Doh, went and re-looked at mine following Merky's post and hadn't seen the inner rub strip he refers to in the darkness of the garage. However there is still very little gap to the outer seal of mine as the door and glass curvature fit fairly well.

My doors have seals inside and out. The inner one is tubular and stuck on the door card the outer one is more of a blade shape and fixed to the door skin. The outer one doesn't quite touch the glass in the centre due to the curvature of the door.

IVE NOTICED THIS ON MY CAR ON BOTH SIDES AND MENTIONED IT WHEN GETTING A QUOTE FOR A REPAINT ,THE BODY SHOP SAID THEY COULD REPAIR THIS BY CLAMPING THE 2 SKINS SLIGHTLY IN THE CENTRE THE PUT IN SOME FIBERGLASS MATTING AND RESIN ON THE INSIDE OF THE DOOR AND WHEN IT HAD CURED THE SEAL SHOULD SIT TIGHT TO THE GLASS SOUNDED GOOD TO ME

Thanks for the info,
Perhaps the one I looked at had the outer seals missing.
You could almost get your fingers down the gap.
