Big Brake Upgrade
Discussion
I recently started a thread on here about upgrading the brakes on my S3C, well I've bit the bullet and purchased a kit from a fellow PHer (Hansdaal)
It looks like the calipers and discs etc are from a V6 mondeo and they are 278mm in diamater, have taken some
rubbish pic's and hopefully thet appear below.

They should give a massive improvement in braking power, you might be able to see the increase in brake pad area which should help also.
I have yet to drive the car with the kit but I will keep you posted on how effective they are.
One top tip though is when you are bleeding the system always make sure there is plenty of brake fluid in the reservoir DOH !!
Cheers.....Tony..

They look great, a massive increase in braking area.
Those allen bolts that hold the caliper carriers to the hub - the originals are 10.9 strength hex head bolts (normal bolts are 8.8 thats why most bolts have 8.8 marked on the head) - is there any indication that they are high strength bolts?
Also if you haven't done so its worth removing those bolts again and putting some threadlock on them - the original bolts you should have seem some blue gunk on them when you took them out.
One of the griff/chim owners had a front caliper fall off as the bolts worked loose.

Tony, 887 and 888 do fit the V6 Mondeo but I think they are off the escort Cosworth - did you need to do any "fettling" to get these calipers to fit or did they bolt straight on?
Mark
No Mark they just went straight on dead easy, a straight swap no problems at all.Mark

They are M10x40mm high tensile cap bolts rated at 12.9 so they should be ok, I do take your point chris about threadlock on those bolts it is something I need to when I can! Those allen bolts that hold the caliper carriers to the hub - the originals are 10.9 strength hex head bolts (normal bolts are 8.8 thats why most bolts have 8.8 marked on the head) - is there any indication that they are high strength bolts?

Edited to add I did fit spring washers on the bolts so that should hopefully prevent the bolts from working too loose !!

Hallo Guys,
The numbers on the calipers 888 and 887 are form a Mondeo V6 and Escort Cosworth IIRC. The Granada Cosworth calipers have 27 and 28 on the casting. I used both type of calipers in upgrade kits and the only difference is in the "sliders" The Grnada Cosworth uses 12 mm bolts so you will have to redrill the hub. The Mondeo V6 uses 10 mm bolts and is a straight swap. Beside a small spacer to centralise the caliper to the discs it fits straight on. I have sourced some more NEW calipers and discs so if someone is interested in a brakeupgrade ( 278 mm x 24 mm) they can reach my through my profile.
Hans.

I've got a set of Mondeo V6 calipers that came of my old ST200... any idea if they've fit under a set of 15" Estorils?
I have been doing a bit of research into this and I think that a standard Mondeo Caliper with the 260mm Sierra XR4i discs should fit without the spacer. My thinking here is if you look at the pictures the spacer is about 11mm thick and the sierra discs are 58.1mm deep (all models except XR4x4) where as the Mondeo ones (for all 260mm diameter models) are 47mm deep.
The spacer seems to move the caliper outwards by a small amount, but surely the disc being deeper would have the same effect.
Anyone else have any thoughts?
I realise the above are 278mm discs but they are identical to the 260mm Mondeo discs in all aspects except depth (as for te Sierra 240 and 260mm discs).

Mark, you are absolutley correct, the spacers now fitted on my car wouldn't be needed if the discs were a bit deeper,I have a feeling that the discs from an early 3 door sierra cossie (they were 278mm)would fit without the need for spacers as I had a similar conversion on my old RSTurbo escort and that used those same discs.

Hallo Tony,
The early disc you refer to are 278 mm but the depth is 35.5 mm. So you will need an even thicker spacer ( 22,5 mm) to get the caliper in the middle of the disc. The 2WD cossy disc is 283 mm and the hight is 56 mm so you need a 2 mm spacer. But due to the diameter being 283 they will IMHO not run freely within the sliding bracket.I used some of these disc also but then I reduced the overal width-diameter from 283mm to 278mm. So machined 2,5 mm of. So using the Cossy disc 278 mm with the 58 mm height is the easiest way. When you need other disc in future then you can use a standard disc. I haven´t had any feedback about those small spacers effecting braking in any way.

Hi Hans, I was not implying there was a problem with the spacers I am more than happy to use them, I was just trying to think of a way that others can do the conversion without needing them.I have had a chance to try them out and I have to say the difference is absolutly amazing, you have far more braking power available than any std Chimera or Griffith which are heavier and faster cars. If anybody wants a good low cost brake upgrade that is easy to fit and works, give Hans a call.
Cheers.....Tony..
