Long straight road, late at night and lo! we had a stopwatch (what are the chances rolleyes), so me and me old pal thought we'd test out the S3's 0-60 time. He counted down, and I shouted 'NOW' and he stopped it soon as we HIT 60. Considering was a a little bit wet, here are the results...

First try: 6.8 seconds
Second try: 4.0 seconds eek
Third Try: 6.7 seconds
Final try: 7.4 seconds

I think he messed up the second try don't you? scratchchin
The last try, it has been raining since then, so I really stuggled with traction.
But the First and Third tries astounded me. This machine was that 19 years ago when it left the factory? It's done 103k miles and had no engine work in the history (and the history is extensive!) And since I had no practice in launching a car before like that, yet alone a TVR. And is have no LSD either.

I'm chuffed with her. thumbup

Started her up a bit later and the dash lights aren't working banghead

The cold air would have helped those times, and probably made up for the added passenger weight. What revs did you change up at? Did you top out in second or grab third?

With a standard engine and a datalogger I timed mine at around 7 seconds (but uncalibrated because I only did it in one direction so I didn't eliminate windspeed and gradient).

was that indicated 60 (eg on the speedo) if so probably 5-10% down so more like 56mph so you might need to add a 0.1 or two.

Still good though!

Mike, bizzarely the speedos on TVR's seem to be unusually accurate they don't seem to over read like most speedos. I don't know what went wrong. hehe

You measured 0-60 to 0.1 of a seccond using a stopwatch and the speedo on the car? I'd take any figures recoreded this way with a whole gritter lorry full of salt.

If you genuinely want some accurate figures see if you can find someone with a VBOX performance meter. These are GPS (10MHz) and G-Force based units which will automatically start when you pull away and stop when you hit exactly 60mph. They also compensate for wheelspin and can allow a 1 foot roll out for measuring quarter mile times.

I have used one recently for measuring in gear acceleration figures. (You can set measurements from X mph to Y mph and you can choose any X and any Y, you can even measure braking performance.) I'm going to have some more mods done and then will re-run the tests for comparison.

Anyone tried this in an S Series? I've no idea how accurate it is, but it's got to be cheaper than a proper data logger. scratchchin

If you want to do it on a budget, may I suggest the following:

  1. Borrow a TomTom and drive at a steady 60mph per Tomtom to find out what your in car speedo reads at a true 60mph.
  2. Mount a video camera pointed at speedo.
  3. Have the on screen timer turned on, or have a stopwatch visible in screen running before you begin to move.
  4. Perform your 0-60 run
  5. Replay the video frame by frame and make a note of the timer/stopwatch reading on the timer when the revs first drop (assuming you're launching and holding revs high before dropping clutch) or when the speedo needle first twitches.
  6. Continue to advance the video frame by frame and make a note of the reading when the speedo needle is pointing at the speedo noted earlier (corresponding to 'true 60mph by gps').
  7. Subtract one from the other to derive your 0-60 time

Was saying the other day I encountered a Golf GTI (rated at 6.7 IIRC) recently and the S was slightly quicker, so allowing for RWD a traction advantage in the damp, the TVR figure appears to be at least as reliable as the VW one.

I find that too, my S seems to be the only car Ive driven whereby the speedo matches the TomTom Speed,Ford Ranger 9% Slow, Peugeot 206 about 10% Slow, Landrover Just slow.

I don't know if it was true 60 or not. But it was damp, I have no launching experience, and the engine is standard, so not bad me thinks. I held it in 2nd for 60mph, don't need 3rd.

i agree both my old S and the cerb are very accurate i ve had a road pilot and garmin and have measured them on both
