fuel pump

Broke down tonight, tried to start the car after a short break. It burst into life as usual followed by a splutter then died Now my diagnosis was simple, no whirring fuel pump, it`s dark now so I`ll check the pump asap. Hopefully thats the only problem and I`ve only just manufactured a new throttle cable inner, don`t you just love these cars!

Steve. It sounds very much like it is the full pump. Same thing happenned to me on route to the Silverstone Classic this year. Very disppointing as I needed a full lift home and got to see nothing! But the no whirring etc is a classic for pump failure.

There are lots of electrical problems that can stop the pump running, so connect it straight to the battery with a fused wire to see if it runs. That will tell you straight away whether it's an electrical problem or you have a failed pump.

I can hear the relay clicking, so I know it`s not that, could be the other side of the relay though. I`ve used the search facility for any other thoughts and it came up with a couple of not so obvious faults like a broken solder connection. I`m hoping it`s going to be a simple fix, the car is soon to be sorned for the winter months so I`ve plenty of time to sort it.

Take a known good 12v straight to the pump before you do anything else, find out whether the problem is electrical or mechanical before you start worrying about which connections might be faulty.
