Hi All,
Can any body tell if a slow opening - won`t close fully elecy window on an S3 is an easy fix ? Also I know the engine on the S3c is set up a little different to the non cat 2.9. does the S3c suffer with any tunning-running probs ?

on the window, I would start by taking off the door trim (see http://www.tvrseries.com for details of how to do that. There's also details on my own web site) and then check that the felt runners are in place - lubricate them with a silicone lubricant spray or a rubber and plastic lubricant, Also lubricate all of the joints and arms in the window lifting mechanism with spray grease or similar.

Also clean up the connectors in the wiring to the motor - there's a connector that lies in the bottom of the door.

If that doesn't work you might need to adjust the runners themselves. That needs a lot more explanation so try the above first.

Personally I think an S3c would be a good move - they don't have airflow meters (SO TVRGIT told me rolleyes) and I'm pretty sure (depending on the cars age) that even if it has cats you can take them out.
With a cat it has sensors in the exhaust to regulate the fuel / air mix, a more modern way of adjusting the mixture as it is actually measuring whats coming out of the engine.
Pre cat it measures the air going in and adjusts the mixture based on a prediction of what should come out of the exhaust if it is all working properly - but there actually isn't any feedback to the ECU to confirm this.

Look at the downpipes from the manifolds - if they look thin like these

Ebay Link

then it already has had the cats removed.
If it has much fatter pipes (cats) in place then the cats could either still be in there or they could have been bashed out & replaced with fresh air biggrin

Hi Martin - I've had my S3C for over 11 years now and it currently has 104k on it. As you say the windows aren't the quickest but the advice above is spot on. My car was decatted last year and is now a bit louder as a result but still nice to hear. The car has been serviced by me and a friend since I got it and I haven't had any tuning problems except for a recent decision to look at the timing as I thought it could go a bit better. In this respect the S3C does seem to be different to the non cat versions (even when decatted as the engine management system remains the same) in that setting the system in service mode by disconnecting the throttle pot produces some strange results which I and Tozerman (who also has an S3C and has been looking at his timing as well with result his is also running better but with some not understood bits as well) don't as yet understand; despite this lack of understanding the car is going well and after my fiddle is actually running better - I just don't really know what I've done in detail (but then so what?)!
The S3/4Cs are said to be the best of the V6S's as the torque curve is apparently better and as it doesn't have the airflow meters you can't have the problems that they can occasionally cause but that isn't a reason to go for an S3C unless the other aspects are also good as the non cat cars are good anyway.
Not sure if that has helped - if you have any specifics feel free to PM me and I'll try and help.
Jim

I actually used silicon based vacuum grease to lube my window runners. Don't use petroleum based lubricants because they can swell the rubbers and lock the windows> PTFE based sprays may work. but I have not tried them personally.

Thanks for all your replies.....
I don`t want to buy an S which might have a problematic leccy window, do the motors go, how much is a new one , if it is the motor ?
Is there much difference in performance between 2.8 & 2.9 ?

Hi Martin - the Steve Heath book shows the performance for the 2.8 and 2.9 cars. The figures were based on tests done by various car mags and showed the 2.8 as being a bit slower (160bhp v 169bhp); the Autocar figures showed the 2.8 as 7.6 to 60 whereas Fast Lane showed it as 7.0 v the 2.9 from What Car of 6.9 so there's not a lot in it.
The window motor is listed in the S series website (www.tvrsseries.com - this is well worth a good look as it has an external link to alternative parts as well as lots of other info incl I think buying an S) as Bosch 12v 0130 821070 but not sure where to get one from as the problems do seem to be more the dirty connectors, etc.
The S1 is fine as many on here will tell you but as the 2.9 is a later engine bits may be easier to find?? No doubt others can tell you more re that. The S2 has the 2.9 engine but has wind up windows; the S3 has longer doors which make getting in/out a bit easier for some and electric windows so take your choice as to your important points - maybe the swooping dash of the S1 or the wooden type of the S3 etc can all be a personal preference.
Good luck with the hunting and drive a few you will generally know when it is OK driving
