Engine out to do the gearbox

Hello all..I hope you can help with this..
I've got an S2, and for a while the gearbox has been pretty noisy on the overrun. I have resigned myself to taking the box out over the winter and fitting a recon unit. Thankfully, I'll be moving pretty soon, and will have plent of garage space to do it in, and will be able to work above and below the car (in a pit). The big question is, once the bonnet is off and all of the other stuff out of the way, is it best to remove the engine and gearbox as one, or split them first and then take out the gearbox after the engine? My concern would be damaging the gearbox input shaft if I remove them separately..

Ant I can't vouch for the V6 but the V8 was pretty easy to get out in one lump. Leave the exhaust manifiolds on as the bolts are a pig to get at anyway but on the V8 they were useful to attach the lifting straps to, I threaded them all the way round under the sump but threading them through the manifolds meant they had no chance of slipping off.
I've got straps and an engine crane as you've seen, you're still welcome to borrow them if you want to.
You persuaded her indoors that the big garage was a necessity then!

My gearbox removal, with engine left in, is on my website. Mine is an S3 though so it may not be possible with yours in this manner there are threads stating S1/2 needed the engine out, but if you look at your chassis it may have been previously modified giving the removable section under the gearbox mount as some have.
You are unlikely to damage the input shaft in the removal or refitting if you are careful and don't leave it supporting the weight of the box on its own. But as you'll see from my site the tilting of the engine is key. You'll need two of you at least though to take the weight but with a pit it should be even easier as mine was done in the garage laying on my back.
