Brake Upgrade - Yawn I know !!!
Discussion
All,
I am considering taking the front disks up to 285mm. To do this I need brackets for the existing calipers and the disks.
Brackets I can get from Peninsula, but where can I get/or what car are the 285mm disks off.
I will also be changing the front lines to braided and the pads to EBC Green Stuff.
I reckon I can get all the parts together for less than I am being quoted from either Tower View or Peninsula.
Peninsula are cheaper with the whole package together for £310 + vat. I am not totally sure whether the Tower View package includes braided lines and Green stuff pads. That is £299 + vat.
Any ideas ??
Cheers
Mark

If I could find somewhere that'd supply me the brackets other than Pen & TVR Serv's I would be even happier...
It's not as though it's difficult to fit the bits !!

If you know what you're doing you can usually get the parts cheaper, when you buy from the experts you are paying for their expertise to specify and source parts that will fit the car and are suitable for the job, as well as the parts themselves. I think of it as a 'peace of mind' surcharge. Also you are paying their labour charges, and if you don't mind getting your hands dirty you can save this cost.
But when you go this route you have to be aware that *you* take responsibility for identifying and resolving any problems that crop up. And you know as well as I do, that these problems inevitably *will* crop up from time to time.

I'd love to know this one too... (see my brakes thread).. but don't let ShPub catch you saying the £300 from Tower might be a bit pricey (sorry steve )
Cheers,
Matt.
They are not compared to the costs of the ones going on the 520 and the Griff.
Steve
How much are they these days then??

I haven't seen the bill yet for the 520 one as the spec gets wilder and wilder everytime I talk to Dave. I expect about 800-1000 pnds. The Griff callipers were around the 400 pnd mark and the rotors about 300. Hmm not far off the same then.
The 520 ones are essential because of the performance. The Griff ones are a bit of an indulgence as I already bought the callipers for the 520 last year and so it is just the cost of rotors and mounts this year. the 285 kit would be fine but I thought if I'm doing it let's go the full hog now instead of changing my mind later on. Means I can also tweak the engine a bit more if I want.

Steve,
Are your going for a triple throttle body then ??
Any other engine changes going on ??
Yep. The engine is up at John Eales having the thing fitted... I'm waiting for it now. The engine will be re mapped on the dyno and then we drop it in the car. The only other thing is that we are now running twin fuel pumps (12 litres/minute) as standard to the engine and at some point I'll need to do some cold air ducting for the throttle body. Need it to get the gee gees.
There isn't much more that I can do with the engine. Well there is and I'm planning that for 2003 and could involve a F1 style direct injection system. It really all depends on how it performs. If the suspension and brakes can handle it, may be tempted for the extra horsepower.
Apart form a complete suspension rebuild, brake upgrade and fitting a full cage it will be fairly standard. Oh there is some new instrumentation going in as well.

Steve,
When I was last in Tower View Mark said the engine was having to go away for the throttle body to be fitted. Can you tell me why, out of pure interest ?? It is so Eales can put it on the dyno and map it rather than rolling road it ?
If so does this mean each time you want a tune up you'll be at an engine out situation ??
I thought you were already inducting cold air into the throttle body, how many ponies will it give you. Is it in the range of 1c lower in temp for 3 extra ponies ??
Cheers

John was very concerned about the damage that the transmission would endure on a rolling road, especially as the engine needs to be run at 6000 rpm to get the mapping right - that's where peak power is. The engine is capable of over 7000 rpm. Also when you spend as much as I did for the engine, there is only one man I'll trust to play with it. That is Mr Eales.
IT only takes about 2 hours to get the engine out now - done it enough times and everything is on wingnuts

Yes and no. There is no distributor and virtually nothing to go out of tune. The spark and fuelling is completely controlled by the ECU. All driven off the TDC detector on the crank. No rotor arm, no dizzy, no cap. Lots of coils though.

Yep but I have another two throttle bodies to cope with! Last year during the very hot days we had, the engine lost some 80 bhp due to the air temp soaring into shutdown and protect the engine mode.

It must make fault diagnosis a simple matter of plugging in the lap top and downloading to see what the system is doing at any given time.
Is it at the stage now where you just plug in and reset the timing or change the fuel mapping to suit conditions, say in the wet. Or is it just a set up and deal with it !!!
I supppose thinking about it you probably already have traction control on it ??
How much longer Steve befor the chassis says enough is enough or do you think the full roll cage will add sufficient rigidity to handle the poke. I know the Wedge chassis can handle a lot of power, but this is getting extreme !!!
As an aside is there going to be any sprints at Lydden this year or have they killed off another gem of a motorsport venue ??? When is the first TVRCC Speed Championship sprint so we can see the new beast in action ??

Fault diagnosis is relatively easy with the DTA software. Includes test software routines for the sensors, injectors, spark plugs etc.
The mapping is fixed. Only changes I've made is to the start up routine to stop flooding on starting in the cold. Did it over a mobile in the pits at Lydden. Don't bother changing it for weather.
Yes there is traction control. Means I can use all the horses in atrocious conditions. Still an absolute handful to control though. There is also a seperate data logging computer built into the car as well.
The chassis is definitely good for 2002 spec. I think with a couple of mods that we could put about 500 bhp through it but I would need to look at the transmission again. Mr Eales is tempting me again with some more goodies... I'll wait until we see how we go this year first.
Lydden is still going. First sprint is 6th April with Tassie racing in the afternoon.
