S1 fuel tank removal

Hello, after a lot of problems with rust inside the fuel tank, I've decided to switch to a stainless steel one. My question is: is it possible to remove the tank from under the car without removing the whole GRP body?

The short answer is yes. When I did my full body off chassis rebuild I still removed and refitted the tank with the body in place.

Tank removal is easy.

Disconnect battery
Disconnect exhaust
Put fag out
Drain tank.
Disconnect sender and both fuel hoses ~ supply and return.
There are 4 bolts in the side of the cradle (2 each side) and a couple at the back of the car (accessed via the boot). 17mm from memory
The tank and cradle will all come out as one. You can undo the straps to release the tank once the whole lot is out.



That's all there is to it.

Don't forget to clean out the small screen just inside the inlet to the fuel pump. You may also want to add an inline filter as your new tank will not have a screen in it.

As an alternative to tank replacement have you thought of repairing it ?

Not sure if it's different between a v8 and an s1 but:

Of the two bolts that hold the boot floor to the tank cradle one is in the boot, the other is under the car in the little space the fuel pump is in.

Pretty sure that is V8 only - the fuel pump isn't under the boot on the V6, so both bolts are in the boot.

In that case it's really easy then
