Managed to get out and enjoy a blast in the sunshine on Saturday, but started to notice a grind/crunch when changing 3rd to 4th at high revs.

No problems with other gears, and no problems with this when driving slightly less "enthusiastically"! Could be nothing, but worth asking advice, and probably checking the gearbox oil - can someone let me know where the gearbox drain plug is?

Thanks

Craig

Hi Craig - I'm pretty sure there is no "Drain Plug" - old oil needs to be syphoned out of the filler plug which is on the nearside of the gearbox...

Have Fun...

Thanks for that, will get under the car tonight - it would be on the nearside - that is the tight side of my garage, but never mind! - Is it towards the front or rear of the gearbox? - sorry for asking such basic questions, just make it all that much easier - I am still learning!

its on the Box joined to the bellhousing and is a plug with a hex socket (10mm IIRC) - hard to describe better than that but you will see it when you are there

you can see the boss on page 2 of this:

enjoy !

The TVR S owners handbook specified a GL5 spec oil for the gearbox but the recommended stuff in a type 9 box is GL4. The GL5 allegedly causes the synchromesh to wear and I can vouch from experience that even a good gearbox with GL5 will not change gears as slickly at high revs. When I replaced the oil with GL4 spec it was fine. That was in a Westfield and if you check he www.wscc.co.uk boardroom for GL4 you'll find loads of posts about this.

Thanks Jed - As I do not know what oil is in there, is it OK to mix 5 with 4, or do I need to drain to ensure it is all one type?

Thats an interesting one as when I changed the oil in the box and diff i bought Millers transmissin oil and their label states "... exceeds the requirements of GL4 and GL5..." so where does that leave me then ?

I was advised by my local indy (who hill climbs and really knows the type 9) that the GL4 or 5 is not really key. Just don't use auto transmission fluid and use a good quality semi or fully synthetic gearbox oil. I can't remember the temp spec as am away from home and will post correct spec at weekend (80W90 I think though)

This topic is very old but already contains good informations (Use 75w90 GL4 oil) so there is no need to create a new one for my question.

There is no drain plug on the Ford T9 gearbox. I have to change the tail seal so I would like to do an oil change in the same time. What do you think about creating a drain plug as described here : http://mgaroadster.co.uk/Ford_Type_9_Sump_Plug.htm

It's an easy mod. Did you ever try ?

To drain my gearbox some time ago (not something you need to do very often) I loosened the bolts holding the tail housing to the main gearbox casing and prised it back about a millimetre, Messy but I think the majority of the oil came out, and clamped back up again with no issues

Ideally done after a run so oil is hot and runnier smile

and three the other side

That little drain plug mod looks simple enough yes

Some decent manual transmission oil will probably solve the problem. Especially if the previous owner put ATF in the 'box.

There is a "school of thought" that GL5 is not compatible with old skool bronze synchro rings? This guy dispels that opion..... GL4 or GL5

I wonder what bright spark in marketing decided to call their GL5 oil FFL4... wink

I had a Capri where someone had fitted an Allen bolt as a drain from what I thought was very early in its life. I wasn't ever really sure how it was done without filling it with swarf . May explain why I had to change it ! The lay shaft in the type 9 doesn't cope well when there's a low oil level.

S1 (2.8engine ) had the "normal" layshaft and needle rollers, Later cars, from introduction of 2.9 I'd guess, had the improved g'box with stub shafts and caged rollers.
Don't suppose either would be too happy without enough oil! wink
