Are you sure it will fit in?
Vee engines with multivalve heads tend to be wide - although granted we know the cossie granada engine fits.

Sounds like a good project though and probably a better donor now than the granny engine.

There's also a 3 litre Mondeo V6 but I think it is a later engine.

i think the only thing i may have to do is turn the inlet manifold around so there is more room, and the sump may cause a problem, does anyone not if the sump can be changed with anything to make it easier to fit.

Is the sump steel or alloy?

If it is steel I can't imagine its that hard to alter it & weld it back up.
An alloy one creates a few more challenges but at the end of the day it might even be possible to build your own sump from steel.
I can't imagine it is the biggest hurdle you are going to face! eek

Remember to take lots and lots of photos as you go!

John, can I ask, why are you putting this engine in? Just curious.

i have a choice of engines rover v8, jag v12 and mondeo v6, the v8 has been done, the jag i dont think i have a cat in hells chance of making it fit so that leaves the v6

Is it really worth all the work to fit a 2.5 Duratec? You're not looking at much of a bhp increase (although it probably revs better than a cologne) and they aren't without problems.

Have you sourced the parts you need for it? Which gearbox or bell housing are you using? Which ECU? Then there are the exhaust manifolds that need manufacturing. It's all going to add up to a lot of pennies unless you can make a lot of the bits yourself.

If it was me then I'd look at either a Jag or Ford 3.0 engine or the 3.0 from an Omega. At least with those you get some noticeable bhp increase. The Omega is RWD so if the gearbox can fit in the transmission tunnel then that would be my choice for an easy conversion. IIRC the Jag unit has been used in a continental make of se7en style car so that might be worth investigating to seen which gearbox they used if you want a Jag V6.

The cheapest and easiest option is always the Cosworth V6, but I understand if you want something different.

Good luck.
Jed

Something else to consider - is there any chance a jag straight 6 could fit?

If I were looking at an engine other then the v6 or V8 then I would seriously condider a Nissan Skyline, purely from the point of tuning parts being available(and lots of horses to start with).

i can understand what your saying but i have a full equiped workshop with 2 poster ramps and a pipe bender for any mods i need to do regards chassis and exhaust, accounts with most of the motor factoring companys for any part i may need + i have the complete donar car so i may not be short of a lot and not alot of people have done this the bhp of the engine im using is 205bhp

Fair enough - if you've got the skills and the gear then it's doable without breaking the bank.
Sounds like you have the ST200 engine as well so should be an interesting car and I'd guess a few kilos lighter too at the end.

If it was me i would go with a 4.0 ford explorer engine, it is based on the 2.9 cologne and being a pushrod engine should fit it nicely. 200bhp as standard and would be torquetastic. Just need to get a flywheel (perhaps from a mustang?) as all explorers were automatics.

Horrid lump.

If you've got a 2.5 V6 Duratec at 205bhp, that'll be the ST200 lum (as someone said earlier).

The limiting factor on power on those was the manifolds - a company called MSDS did freer flowing headers and there have been reports of 240bhp from it.

I used to have an ST200, and with suitable tinkering and a decent exhaust it sounded a lot better than it should.

Keep us posted with progress...!

couple of idea's for you

i've read somewere that most of the Mazda based Ford V6's bolt up to MX5 boxes

Also you can get a bellhousing adaptor to fit a VW 1.8 20vT or VR6/R32 motor up to a Supra box....pretty easy to get close to 300bhp out of a 225 TT motor

I have been considering this option for when my V6 24V blows up. Lighter, more economical, more effficent, plenty of tunnig opportunities....sounds ideal really. The only question being the gearbox RWD, but as has been said, Ford and Mazda are but one, so there`s bound to be some suitable parts available.
Excellent, keep us posted please.
