Sorry to ask a question which probably gets asked every few weeks, but does anyone know the spec/part number for replacement prop shaft UJ`s for an S1. Guess S2/3/4 are the same?
Also while I think about, I guess the rubber differential mountings are the same as a Sierra? I get a nasty grating type noise under hard accelleration in the first two gears (Cosworth 24v engine with 243torques), so I tend not to give it too much welly in these gears, which is why the gearbox seems to be lasting far longer than it ought to!. It`s fine in third and above though, so I doubt its internals? I and various other people have checked it all out, and can find nothing obviously wrong. I have changed the drive shaft UJ`s, which made little difference, so am now scratching around. Am even thinking about solid mounting the diff with machined Nylon mounts.

If the rear diff mount is shot the noise will be a knocking noise (much like when a drive shaft CV joint fails) and (in my experience)is worse in reverse. I would not have thought a grinding sound would be as a result from poor mounts unless there is contact with the body/chassis as a result (but this should be obvious).

It may be that you have a gearbox issue (I did) as my main bearings failed. This shows itself firstly in 1st, then in 2nd and finally in 3rd gradually getting worse as it progresses. It doesn't show in 4th or 5th due to gearbox configuration.

See ths thread with my best attempts at describing the noises, which was not very good as you'll see.

Also see this if you decide to remove the propshaft and gearbox (although for an S1 I think it is engine out anyway for the box)

BTW a quick check by my local indy (who knows type 9 boxes) and he just sat in the car and said "main bearings!! Probably need a layshaft too" and he was correct as I saw the bit after and they were well shot (layshaft was anyway)

Here's a couple of pics of the V8S rear mounting, I think it has been engineered to stop it twisting.

The four allen head bolts replace the 4 top cover bolts with the red tube as a spacer.

Ah, so the V8 diff is solid mounted, and its looks the same diff. ford diff. as the S1/2/3. Thanks for that Barkychoc.

Thanks for your other thoughs guys. I am fairly convinced the problem is to do with either the diff mountings, or the innards of the diff. The noise is definatley coming from the rear, and it only does in the lower gears when the car squats down.

When I did the engine conversion, I fitted an LSD from a 4x4 Sierra, with partly unknown history. Maybe the higher torque in the lower gears is showing up a fault?

There are 2 x rubber mounts in that bracket - it isn't entirely solid, I think you will need some rubber in the mounts to absorb the various shocks going on.
The bottom pic shows the red spacers but these connect to the intermediate metal plate.
This plate is then mounted to the chassis via rubber bushes and the 2 big bolts through them either side.

Can you see any evidence where the diff or the carrier has been clonking the chassis?
Look particularly on the drivers side front lower mount - there isn't a lot of room there between it & the chassis.

The diff is a ford one - a LSD version and I have copied all the numbers down off mine I will dig them out.

I replaced the prop shaft UJs on my S3C some years ago with Hardy Spicer HS195. These are the ones that have the grease nipple fitted; you can get another one which is without grease nipples though. They get a couple of strokes with the grease gun at the annual service and the difference is slight but worth the effort.
